Huskies Fall to Western Connecticut at Home

GORHAM, Maine – The Western Connecticut State Wolves rolled to a 22-4 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies on Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field in Gorham. A dozen different Wolves scored goals in the contest and nine players had multiple points. The Wolves move to 10-3 overall and 4-0 in Little East Conference play while the Huskies drop to 2-10 and 0-4 in conference games.

The Goalies: 
WCSU: Nicholas Elarde: 1-0, two saves, two goals allowed, .500 save percentage
WCSU: Brendan Grove: two saves, two goals allowed, .500 save percentage
USM: Addison Dietz (Waterbury Center, Vt./Harwood Union): 0-7, eight saves, 13 goals allowed, .381 save percentage
USM: Nathan Plourde (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills): six saves, nine goals allowed, .400 save percentage.
 
How It Happened:
  • Western Connecticut controlled the game from the opening face-off and scored six goals to open the game before the Huskies got on the scoreboard. Julian Duque scored two of Western Connecticut's six goals and Benjamin Hawthorne had two assists during the run.
  • The onslaught continued in the second quarter as the Wolves shutout the Huskies 7-0 during the frame. Trey Aronow and Stephen Cicchetti each scored twice in the quarter.
  • The Wolves added nine more goals in the second half to coast to a 22-4 win and remain undefeated in LEC play.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Duque led all players in goals with four and also had an assist for a game-leading five points.
  • Cicchetti (three goals and an assist), Matt Sweeney (two goals and two assists) and Hawthorne (one goal and three assists) each had four points for the Wolves.
  • Aronow scored three goals for Western Connecticut.
  • The Huskies were led by junior Schuyler Wetmore (Cumberland Center, Maine/Greely) with two goals and an assist.
  • Seniors Nick James (Portland, Maine/Deering) and Omar Contreras (Portland, Maine/Deering) also scored for the Huskies and sophomore Aman Zusner (Lyman, Maine/Massabesic) recorded an assist.
  • Western Connecticut won 20-of-29 face-offs with Jon Russack-Baker winning 18 and recording 14 ground balls.
  • Freshman Herbert Bryant (Portland, Maine) caused three turnovers and had four ground balls while sophomore Luke Gagner (Portsmouth, N.H./ Traip Academy) also forced three turnovers to go along with two ground balls.
 
Up Next: The Huskies will celebrate Senior Day on Wednesday afternoon before their 4PM game against Salem State.
