PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – In their first Little East Conference match of the season the University of Southern Maine men's tennis team was defeated by Rhode Island College 8-1 with freshman
Alex Lancaster (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland Christian) recording a win at sixth singles.
Josh Brien and Jack Cadden defeated sophomores
Zach Desmarais (St. Cyrille, QC, Canada / École Secondaire L'Odyssée) and
Azam Jiwa (Calgary, AB, Canada/West Island College) at first doubles 8-1 and Anchormen took second and third doubles as well. lost to Jose Afonso and Nicolas Arena 8-1. Junior
Ethan Rudnicki (Levant, Maine/Hermon) and sophomore
Zac Howe (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy) lost 8-2 to Noah Morin and Elijah Gouin. Freshmen
Landon Weaver (Bowdoinham, Maine/ Mt. Ararat) and Lancaster dropped their third doubles match to Peter Pond and Zach Siemmao 8-2 as well.
Desmarais lost 6-0,6-4 at first singles to Brien and Jiwa was defeated 6-2,6-0 by Morin at second singles. The Anchormen also recorded wins at number three, number four and number five singles. Cadden defeated Rudnicki 6-0,6-1, Gouin defeated Howe 6-2,6-3 and Siemmao won 6-3, 6-1 over Weaver. Lancaster came from behind at sixth singles to beat Andrew Fanning 2-6, 6-3, 10-7.
The next match for the Huskies will be on April 5 at Colby-Sawyer College at 3:30PM.
