Men’s Lacrosse Drops Non-Conference Game to Saint Joseph’s

GORHAM, Maine – The Saint Joseph's College of Maine men's lacrosse team defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 29-13 on Wednesday evening behind eight goals from Xavier Michaud and 15 assists from Tim Goodfellow. Southern Maine senior Nick James (Portland, Maine/Deering) scored five goals for the Huskies and became the second player in program history to reach 100 career goals.

The Records: Saint Joseph's: 3-5, Southern Maine: 2-5
 
The Goalies: 
USM: Tanner Nussinow (Portland, Maine/Casco Bay): 2-1, 17 saves, 24 goals allowed, .405 save percentage.
USM: Addison Dietz (Waterbury Center, Vt./Harwood Union): one save, four goals allowed, .200 save percentage
SJC: Brannon Gilbert: 3-2, five saves, eight goals allowed, .385 save percentage.
SJC: Liam Greene: one save, five goals allowed, .167 save percentage.
 
How It Happened:
  • The Monks set the tone by outscoring the Huskies 5-1 in the opening quarter thanks to two goals apiece by Noah Tierney-Honan and Matt Denman along with one from Michaud. Goodfellow assisted on three of the five goals.
  • Saint Joseph's continued to attack aggressively and added eight more goals in the second quarter and went up 13-3 at the half.
  • The two teams combined for 12 goals in the third quarter but the Monks outscored the Huskies 7-5 during the frame.
  • The final quarter saw the Monks score nine times while allowing another five Southern Maine goals to win the game 29-13.  James scored twice in the quarter for his 100th and 101st career goals.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Goodfellow's 15 assists and 18 points led all players followed by Michaud's 10 points off eight goals and two assists.
  • Tiger Hopkins recorded seven points off of three goals and four assists.
  • Tierney-Honan and Denman each scored four goals.
  • James scored five goals and had two assists to lead Southern Maine.
  • Seniors Schuyler Wetmore (Cumberland Center, Maine/Greely) and Omar Contreras (Portland, Maine/Deering) recorded six and four points respectively. Wetmore scored two goals and assisted on four more while Contreras netted four goals.
  • Southern Maine also had goals from sophomore Tucker Nussinow (Winthrop, Maine/Kent Hills School) and senior Jacob Lang (West Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills) and an assist from senior Cruise Lizotte-Johnson (Sanford, Maine).
 
Up Next: The Huskies will travel to Dean College on Monday for a 4PM non-conference contest.
