Rivier Rolls Past Southern Maine Men’s Lacrosse

NASHUA, N.H. – Senior Nick James (Portland, Maine/Deering) scored four goals and recorded an assist for the University of Southern Maine men's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon in a 20-9 loss to Rivier University. James' now has 154 points in his career and is a point away from tying Nate DelGiudice (2015-2018) for the most in program history.

The Goalies: 
Rivier: Sawyer Gagnon: 2-1, seven saves, four goals allowed, .636 save percentage.
USM: Addison Dietz (Waterbury Center, Vt./Harwood Union): 0-4, five saves, 10 goals allowed, .333 save percentage.
Rivier: Samuel Tibbetts: four saves, five goals allowed, .444 save percentage.
USM: Tanner Nussinow (Winthrop, Maine/Casco Bay): 13 saves, 10 goals allowed, .565 save percentage.
 
How It Happened:
  • Rivier outscored the Huskies 6-0 in the first quarter and added another six goals before James got the Huskies on the scoreboard in the second. James scored again with a man-up and the Huskies entered halftime down 15-2.
  • Connor Eck scored five of the nine Raider goals in the second.
  • Each side scored four goals in the third quarter with James netting two of the Southern Maine goals and assisting on another by sophomore Tucker Nussinow (Winthrop, Maine/Kent Hills School). Nussinow and senior Omar Contreras (Portland, Maine/Deering) each scored a man-up goal in the quarter.
  • Senior Schuyler Wetmore (Cumberland Center, Maine/Greely) scored twice in the fourth quarter as the Huskies outscored the Raiders 3-1 in the final fifteen minutes to make the score 20-9.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The Rivier offense was led by Eck with six goals and three assists. His three assists tied teammate Michael Ference for the most in the game. Ference also netted three goals.
  • Four other Raiders recorded multiple points with Nicholas Tavares logging three goals and two assists, Coby Mercier recording a goal and two assists, Chris Heitmiller notching three goals and Sean Callinan scoring twice.
  • James (four goals and an assist) and Wetmore (three goals and two assists) each had five points for the Huskies.
  • Contreras and sophomore Andrew James (Portland, Maine/Deering) both had a goal and an assist and senior Dylan Whitney (Wells, Maine) recorded an assist as well.
  • Rivier outshot the Huskies 59-28 and benefited from 24 Husky turnovers while committing 15. The Raiders also won 20 faceoffs while losing 13 and collected 45 ground balls compared to Southern Maine's 26.
  • Each team scored three times with a man advantage.  
 
Up Next: The Huskies will return home to host Norwich University at Hannaford Field at 4PM on Wednesday.
