Wildcats Hold Off Huskies 8-7

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Noah Fye scored three goals including the game-winner to lead the Johnson & Wales Wildcats to an 8-7 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday evening. Senior Schuyler Wetmore (Cumberland Center, Maine/Greely) recorded his second four-point game in a row with two goals and two assists for the Huskies.

The Records: JWU: 1-0; Southern Maine: 0-2
 
The Goalies: 
JWU: Trent Madigan: 1-0, 11 saves, seven goals allowed, .611 save percentage.
USM: Addison Dietz (Waterbury Center, Vt./Harwood Union): 0-2, 14 saves, eight goals allowed, .636 save percentage.
 
How It Happened:
  • Fye scored the first goal of the game early in the first quarter to put the Wildcats ahead.
  • The Huskies scored their first man-down goal of the season when senior Omar Contreras (Portland, Maine/Deering) tied the game at 1-1 and then took the lead shortly after when senior Cruise Lizotte-Johnson (Sanford, Maine) collected a ground ball and step up a goal by Wetmore.
  • The Wildcats scored three times in the second quarter, including two goals during the first two minutes to go up 4-2.
  • Sophomore Aman Zusner (Lyman, Maine/Massabesic) scored his third goal of the season to cut the lead to 4-3 with 2:11 left in the half.
  • Joe McIntyre netted a goal for the Wildcats 1:20 into the second half before sophomore Andrew James (Portland, Maine/Deering) scored a man-up goal to bring the Huskies within a goal.
  • Jackson Vecchio scored twice in less than a minute to extend the JWU lead to 7-4 but the Huskies got a goal back with Andrew James' second of the quarter and with just 16 seconds left Wetmore scored for the second time to put the Huskies down one heading into the final quarter.
  • Nick James tied the game at 7-7 3:35 into the fourth quarter but just 10 seconds later Mike Catuosco won the ensuing faceoff and fed the ball to Fye who completed his hat trick to give the hosts the lead.
  • Madigan made five saves and forced a turnover over the final 10 minutes of play to allow the Wildcats to come away with the victory. Sophomore Tucker Nussinow (Winthrop, Maine/Kent Hills School) applied pressure with three shots on goal over that span but all were saved by Madigan.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The Wildcats went 15-of-19 on faceoffs and collected 40 ground balls compared to Southern Maine's 22.
  • The Huskies scored twice with a man-up and once while they were down a player while JWU could not convert their extra man opportunities.
  • Wetmore's four points led all players and Nick James tallied three points off a goal and two assists. Both of James' assists came on man-up goals.
  • Catuosco recorded 19 ground balls and won 15 faceoffs.
  • Lizotte-Johnson collected four ground balls to lead the Huskies and sophomore Duncan Hayes (Augusta, Maine/Cony) caused three turnovers.
 
Up Next: Southern Maine will play Dean College on Saturday at noon at Dean.
