Men’s Ice Hockey Falls at NEC

HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College Pilgrims defeated the Southern Maine Huskies by a score of 3-1 in New England Hockey Conference men's hockey action on Saturday.
 
When and Where: Saturday, February 4, 2023 – Henniker, N.H.

The Records: NEC: 10-12-1, 7-8-1NEHC, Southern Maine: 5-17-2, 4-13-0 NEHC
 
The Goaltenders: Andrew Kormos: 7-5-0: 34 saves, one goal allowed, sophomore Mason Palmer (Cumming, Ga./Connections Academy): 1-9-1, 32 saves, three goals allowed. 
 
How It Happened/Inside the Boxscore:
  • Palmer was perfect in the net in the first period stopping all 15 shots he faced. On the other end of the ice Kormos also had a clean period with nine saves.
  • The Huskies had good scoring chances early in the second period but had two shots hit the pipe twice in a 50 second span.
  • The Pilgrims eventually got on the board with an Alex LaPlante goal 5:36 into the period to put NEC up 1-0.
  • Senior Curtis Judd (Newton, Mass./Albany Academy) tied the game with his fifth power play goal of the season 17:40 into the second with Nolan McElhaney (Natick, Mass./Long Island University) and Zach Desmarais (St. Cyrille, QC, Canada) providing the assists. McElhaney now has nine assists on the season while Desmarais has six.
  • Five of Judd's 15 goals on the season have come on the power play.
  • NEC reclaimed the lead with a power play goal of their own from Chris Lee 8:35 into the third and Wyatt Andres put the Pilgrims up 3-1 later in the period. Kormos assisted on the final goal for the Pilgrims.
  • Both team's put their bodies on line with a combined 34 shots being blocked. The Huskies had a slight 18-16 advantage in blocked shots.
  • Freshman defenseman Jakub Suran (Liberec, Czech Republic) led the way with five blocked shots.
 
Up Next: The Huskies will wrap up the season next Saturday at Babson at 4PM.
