Men’s Lacrosse Opens Season with Loss to Maine Maritime

GORHAM, Maine – The University of Southern Maine men's lacrosse team opened the 2023 season on Sunday afternoon with a 19-9 loss to Maine Maritime Academy. Senior Schuyler Wetmore (Cumberland Center, Maine/Greely) scored two goals and also had two assists for the Huskies.
 
When and Where: February 26, 2023 – Gorham, Maine – Hannaford Field
 
The Records: MMA: 1-0; Southern Maine: 0-1
 
The Goalies: 
USM: Addison Dietz (Waterbury Center, Vt./Harwood Union): 0-1, 14 saves, 13 goals allowed, .519 save percentage.
USM: Nathan Plourde (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills): five saves, six goals allowed, .455 save percentage.
MMA: Zach McCarthy: 1-0, eight saves, nine goals allowed, .471 save percentage.  
 
How It Happened:
  • The visiting Mariners scored the first three goals of the game but the Huskies answered with two goals Brothers in the final two minutes of the first quarter. Sophomore Andrew James (Portland, Maine/Deering) scored the first and his brother Nick James (Portland, Maine/Deering) scored the second with 35 seconds left in the quarter.
  • Senior Omar Contreras (Portland, Maine/Deering) tied the game then the team traded goals before the Mariners scored three straight goals to go up 7-4.
  • Wetmore scored his second goal of the game with nine seconds left in the half to cut the lead to 7-5.
  • The Huskies tied the game at 7-7 thanks to goals from sophomores Tucker Nussinow (Winthrop, Maine/Kent Hills School) and Aman Zusner (Lyman, Maine/Massabesic). However, the Mariners outscored the Huskies 6-1 over the rest of the third quarter with Zusner netting the Southern Maine goal.
  • Maine Maritime scored six more times in the final frame to make the final score 19-9.
Inside The Stats:
  • The Mariners scored on two of their extra man advantages.   
  • Jacob Hintermaier scored five goals for Maine Maritime and was one of five Mariners to score multiple goals along with Sam Nichol, Trey Marcil, Jayden Wilson and Jacob Belanger.
  • Brendan Reddington scored a goal and had six assists for the Mariners while Wilson totaled seven points of a pair of assists.
  • Wetmore scored twice and had two assists to lead the Huskies while Nick James had a goal and two assists.
Up Next: The Huskies will travel to Rhode Island to play Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday afternoon at 4PM.
