LEWISTON, Maine – Elliot Cravitz scored a team-high 17 points, knocking down 5-of-9 from three, to lead four players in double figures as the Bates College Bobcats sank 13 threes to defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies 78-68 in a non-conference men's basketball game Tuesday night at Alumni Gymnasium.
Cravitz added four rebounds and three assists for Bates. Peter Psyhogeos added 15 points and eight rebounds, Simon Mccormick tossed in 14 points and handed off seven assists, while Stephen Ward had 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Cravitz, Psyhogeos and Mccormick combined for 11 of the Bobcats' 13 threes.
Sophomore
Tommy Whelan (Bronx, N.Y./Fordam Prep) led all scorers with 21 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. Whelan was 5-for-11 from the floor and 2-for-3 from three. Senior
Cody Hawes (Carmel, Maine/Hermon) added 18 points, five rebounds and five assists, while freshman
Brady Saunders (Brewer, Maine) added 16 points and four assists.

Today's game marked the 46
th meeting between the University of Southern Maine Huskies and the Bates College Bobcats. Southern Maine leads the overall series 29-17. The Huskies and Bobcats are 2-2 in their last four meetings prior to tonight's game, with Southern Maine earning a 73-64 win on November 22, 2022.
How It Happened:
- Falling behind by 11, 36-25, at the break, Southern Maine shot just 9-for-26 from the field (34.6 percent) from the field and 2-for-12 from three to open the game. While Bates shot marginally better (13-for-32) from the floor, the Bobcats knocked down seven first half three-pointers.
- Bates surged ahead of USM in the first half using a 10-0 run. A three from Hawes had USM down 16-13 with 14:23 on the clock, before the Bobcats scored 10 straight including back-to-back threes from Simon McCormick and Elliot Cravitz to lead 26-13 with 10:59 to play. Both teams traded scores the rest of the half, and Lincoln Rybeck tallied a layup with seconds left in the half to give Bates its 36-25 lead into the break.
- USM started the second half hot, outscoring Bates 7-3, to cut its deficit to 39-32 with 16:37 to play, but the Bobcats answered right back with five straight points from Peter Psychogeos on a layup and a three to lead by 12, 44-32.
- A three from Dixon cut the Huskies' deficit to 57-48 with 9:16 to go, but Bates again ran off a run, scoring 10 unanswered points highlighted by threes from Elliot Cravits and Grant Nadeau to lead 67-48 with 7:01 to go. From there, the Bobcats led by as many as 23 points, 76-53, with just over five minutes to go. The Huskies scored the final 10 points of the game for the 78-68 final.
Inside The Stats:
- Bates outrebounded the Huskies 38-28 in the game and had a 12-4 lead in offensive boards. Fourteen of the Bobcats 78 points were on second chance buckets.
- The Huskies shot 53.8 percent (14-for-26) from the field in the second half, and went 7-for-11 from three (63.6 percent) in the second half after shooting less than 17 percent from beyond the arc in the first half.
