Johnson & Wales Defeats Southern Maine 7-2

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University Wildcats defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies by a score of 7-2 on Saturday afternoon in a men's New England Hockey Conference contest. The Wildcats were led by linemates Sam Bend and Brent Rickett with three points each. Bend scored twice and had the assist on Ricket's goal while Rickett assisted on both of Bend's tallies. Davis Bone also recorded a goal and two assists.

Series History:
The Huskies and Wildcats have now played 13 ties with the Huskies leading the series 7-4-2. Southern Maine had won three of the last four meetings including both of last season's games.

How It Happened:
  • Brendan Doyle opened the scoring for the Wildcats 12:05 into the first period and Bend added two goals in the period to put the hosts up 3-0.
  • The Wildcats added two more goals in the second period before Senior Nolan McElhaney (Natick, Mass./Long Island University broke the shutout with his third goal of the season. Senior Austin Marini (Hyde Park, Mass./Catholic Memorial) had the assist for his team-leading sixth point of the season.
  • Junior Mathieu Sabourin (Alexandria, Ontario) cut the lead to 5-2 just under three minutes into the third period thanks to an assist from freshman Marcus Torgner (Mjolby, Sweden). Torgner logged his first career point with the helper.
  • The Wildcats closed out the game with two goals in the third period.
