John Chandler ’83 to Receive Husky Athletics’ Weiden Award

CHANDLER WILL BE HONORED AS PART OF THE 2023 HUSKY HALL OF FAME BANQUET & CEREMONY ON OCT. 15

GORHAM, Maine – John Chandler '83 has been chosen by University of Southern Maine Department of Athletics as the 2023 recipient of the Clifford O.T. Weiden Award.  The award is presented annually to individuals who, or businesses from the community that, contribute special talents and time to the University.

"John has been a consistent contributor to USM Athletics in many ways.  Over the years, I have personally benefited from his guidance and leadership on several topics related to Athletics and program development in general," said Director of Athletics Al Bean. "He has served as a member of our Athletic Development Council and most recently made the lead gift to completely resurface Flaherty Field.  With his gift, Flaherty Field is now one of the finest natural grass playing surfaces in the region.  John's contributions to the program are very important and greatly appreciated by me and many others."

Chandler graduated from the University in 1983 and was a member of the Huskies' baseball team as a pitcher.  After graduating with a degree in business management he worked in the private sector before becoming a Certified Public Accountant. He joined the Portland-based firm BerryDunn in 1987 as a staff auditor.  His hard work, business acumen, and leadership skills allowed him to rise through the firm's ranks and in 1999 he became BerryDunn's Chief Executive Officer and Managing Partner.  He served in the role until 2021 and under his leadership the firm saw tremendous growth. Chandler retired from BerryDunn in 2022 as a long and successful career.

Chandler is an active community member and has lent his time, leadership, and expertise to numerous organizations and entities.  He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Fryeburg Academy, his alma mater.  Chandler also has been involved with the United Way of Southern Maine as Co-Chair of the Tocqueville Society and is on the Board of Directors for the Maine Connectivity Authority.  In the past, he has held board member roles with Community Dental, the University of Southern Maine Foundation, the Institute for Civic Leadership, and the Maine Heritage Policy Center.

He will receive the award as part of the 37th Annual Husky Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony on Sunday, October 15 (5:00 pm) at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland, Maine presented by Gorham House of Pizza.
