Huskies Fall to Vikings at Home

GORHAM, Maine. -- The Salem State University men's tennis team swept the doubles and all but one of the singles points as they defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 8-1on Tuesday afternoon in Gorham.

Ethan Rudnicki (Levant, ME/Hermon) and Antoine Gignac (Quebec City, QC/St. Lawrence) had the most contested doubles match of the day, winning three points off of Adam Stanneck and Kevin Merino-Rivas at third doubles, before falling 8-3. At first doubles Zac Howe (Arundel, ME/Thornton Academy) and Devin Witte (Ridgeville Corners, OH/Archbold) fell 8-2 to Roni Bazile and Parker Andreoli, while at first doubles,  Jonathan Bartuccio-Pereira (St. Bruno, QC/College Antoine Girourard) and Zach Desmarais (St. Cyrille, QC/École Secondaire L'Odyssée) lost 8-1 to Andrew Muttiah and Cory Cherico.

Witte pulled off the lone win of the day for the Huskies, taking down Andreoli at fifth singles 6-3, 7-5. Gignac gave Stanneck a challenge at sixth singles, taking the first set 6-1, losing the second set 6-1, and then narrowly dropping the tie breaker 10-8. Rudnicki fell at fourth singles 6-1, 6-2, while Howe dropped his match at third singles 6-1, 6-1. Both Bartuccio-Pereira and Desmarais lost their matches 6-0, 6-0.

The Huskies are back in action on Thursday, April 21 as they travel to Thomas College for a match at 4pm in Waterville.
