Huskies Win Season Opener 5-4 over Thomas

GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Men's Tennis team won four singles matches and one doubles match to take down the Thomas College Terriers 5-4 in their home opener on Tuesday afternoon in Gorham.

Thomas opened the day with wins at first doubles and second doubles where Jose Afonso (Tenerife, Spain) and Gabe McPhail (Windham, Maine) took down Cole Ouellette (Lewiston, ME/Lewiston) and Zac Howe (Arundel, ME/Thornton Academy) 8-5 and Liam Gould (Freeport, Maine) and Rajhan Munnings (Providenciales, Turks and Caicos) beat Jonathan Bartuccio-Pereira (St. Bruno, QC/Collège Antoine Girourard) and Zach Desmarais (St. Cyrille, QC/École Secondaire L'Odyssée) 8-5. 

At third doubles, Ethan Rudnicki (Levant, ME/Hermon) and Antoine Gignac (Quebec City, QC/St. Lawrence) turned the tide for the Huskies as they picked up a key 8-3 win over Caleb Daigneault (Cornville, Maine) and Kegan Rodrigue (Auburn, Maine).

Southern Maine secured the win, picking up wins in four of the six singles matches. Ouellette took down Afonso 6-2, 6-4 at first singles while Bartuccio-Periera beat Gould 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 at second singles. At fourth singles, Howe bested Munnings in three sets 7-5, 6-7, 6-2. Gignac grabbed the last win of the day for the Huskies as he won 6-2, 6-0 over Daigneault. At third singles McPhail took down Desmarais 7-6, 6-7, 2-6. Rudnicki fell at fifth singles 6-7, 2-6.

The Huskies are back in action on Saturday, April 2 as they host Rhode Island College at 12pm in Gorham.
