GORHAM, Maine – Currently ranked twelfth in the East Region, the University of Southern Maine men's indoor track and field team will host the Little East Conference men's indoor track and field championship meet on Saturday, February 19 in Gorham.
When and Where: Saturday, February 19, 2022 – University of Southern Maine – Costello Sports Complex Field House
Participating Teams: Castleton, Eastern Connecticut State, Keene State, Plymouth State, Rhode Island College, UMass Boston, and UMass Dartmouth
History: The Huskies have won seven of the last ten LEC indoor track and field championships, with their most recent win coming in 2019. The Little East did not host a championship meet in 2021.
Preview: Over the course of the indoor season, the Huskies have put up a number of impressive performances, many of them ranking at the top of the LEC. Standout pole vaulter
Ben Drummey (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) currently holds the top mark in the Little East Conference this season and is followed closely behind by
Riley Peterson (Barnet, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) and
Alyas Ahmady (South Portland, South Portland) who hold the number two and three marks.
Also expected to perform well in field events is Jacob Jackson (Auburn, Maine/Auburn). Jackson has the third highest mark in the triple jump this season among LEC competitors and the fourth highest in the high jump.
In the 5,000m run, Masho Gebremikael has the fastest time in the conference this season, while teammate Cody Mathewson (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial) is currently ranked fifth. Gebremikael currently sits in fifth in the 3000m run as well.
Keegan Cochrane (Chelsea, Maine/Schenectady) has two top five times going into the championships. He has the second fastest time in the conference in the 600m run and the third fastest time in the 400m dash. Sprinters Ethan Shain (Sanford, Maine/Sanford) and Dan Flaherty (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) currently hold the second and fifth fastest times in the 60m dash.
