GORHAM, Maine – For the first time in program history, the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's soccer team is headed to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament. The Huskies (17-3) claimed the Little East Conference's automatic bid to the tournament after winning the LEC's tournament championship with a 3-1 overtime decision against Western Connecticut State. Southern Maine, the 2022 LEC Regular Season Champion, was the top-seed in the tournament, defeating Castleton University 2-0 in the semifinal and WestConn 3-1 in the championship.
Southern Maine will face Williams College on Saturday, November 12 (1:30 pm) in the first round at host site Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Joining the four team pod with the Huskies, Williams and MIT is Sarah Lawrence. Including the 44 automatic qualifiers (Pool A), one Pool B selection and 19 at-large (Pool C) bids announced today, 64 teams will vie for the 2022 NCAA Division III National Championship Title.
Led by sixth-year head coach
Seth Benjamin '00 (51-22-5), the Huskies have had a historic 2022 season, earning the program's first regular season title, tournament championship title and number one seed. Along the way, Southern Maine has set program benchmarks for wins in a season (17), conference wins in a season (7-1), longest win streak (12), longest unbeaten streak (12), shutouts in a season (12), and goals in a season (65).

Gould set the Huskies' single-season goal record and has 20 goals and seven assists heading into the NCAA tourney. McKenna, the Huskies' second leading scorer, has 12 goals and 2 assists and has been named the LEC's Rookie of the Week four times. The 2022 LEC Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Sargent leads the Huskies from the back and has helped her team limit its opponents to a 0.80 goals against average. Atwood, a three-time LEC Goalkeeper of the Week pick, set the program's record for individual shutouts in a season with 11. She has 15 in her career and is third all-time. Berthiaume, the Huskies all-time leading scorer, has 43 goals and 20 assists in her career for 106 points. She is the first USM women's soccer player to reach and surpass 100 points in her career.
