Huskies’ Comeback Falls Short Against Castleton

RUTLAND, Vt. – The University of Southern Maine men's ice hockey team was defeated 4-3 by Castleton University after trailing 4-0 after the first two periods.

The Goaltenders:  Josh Ward: 1-0-0, 31 saves, three goals allowed; sophomore Kyle Penton (Waltham, Mass./Albany Academy): 1-4-0, 17 saves, four goals allowed;
 
How It Happened/Inside the Boxscore:
  • The Spartans scored two powerplay goals in the first period thanks to Andrew Stefura and Brandon Picard.
  • Castleton added two more goals in the second period to go up 4-0.
  • Nolan McElhaney (Natick, Mass./Long Island University) scored his second goal of the season 46 seconds into the third period with Cole Ouellette (Lewiston, Maine) and Curtis Judd (Newton, Mass./Albany Academy) assisting.
  • Freshman Dylan Hullaby (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) scored the first goal of his collegiate career in the third to make the score 4-2. Ouellette and sophomore Zach Desmarais (St. Cyrille, QC, Canada) provided the assists.
  • Desmarais scored his second goal of the season in the final two-minutes with graduate student Tyler Gardiner (Watertown, Mass.) notched his second assist of the season.
  • Sophomore Mason Palmer (Cumming, Ga./Connections Academy) played 17:20 in net and made a save.
  • Jackson Edwards and Jason Atkinson each logged two points off a goal and an assist for Castleton while nine total Spartans recorded points.
  • Penton made at least 10 saves in each of the three periods and made 16 stops in the third.
Up Next: The Huskies will travel to Saratoga Springs, N.Y. for a NEHC game against Skidmore College tomorrow at 4PM.
