Huskies Shutout Wildcats in Home Opener

GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore goalie Kyle Penton (Waltham, Mass./Albany Academy) made 33 saves while not surrounding a goal to help the University of Southern Maine men's ice hockey team to a 3-0 New England Hockey Conference victory over Johnson & Wales University on Friday night.

History: The Huskies now lead the all-time series 6-3-2.
 
The Records:  Southern Maine: 1-3-0 (1-2-0 NEHC); Johnson & Wales: 0-5-0 (0-3-0 NEHC)
 
The Goaltenders:  Sophomore Kyle Penton (Waltham, Mass./Albany Academy): 1-1-0, 33 saves; Jacob Perrin: 0-5-0, 29 saves, three goals allowed.
 
How It Happened/Inside the Boxscore:
  • Junior defenseman Cole Ouellette (Lewiston, Maine) gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead with laser of goal just 12 seconds in to a power-play just about four-and-a-half minutes into the contest. Mathieu Sabourin (Alexandria, ON, Canada) and Zach Desmarais (St. Cyrille, QC, Canada) assisted on the goal.
  • Desmarais scored a goal of his own off a second chance in the second period to double the lead. Sabourin recorded the assist for his second point of the night.
  • The Huskies added another goal 16:35 in the period when graduate student Tyler Gardiner (Watertown, Mass.) beat Perrin high stick side on a one-timer. Junior Austin Marini (Hyde Park, Mass./Catholic Memorial) fed Gardiner the puck after chasing down a long pass from Kadin Ilott (Kenora, ON, Canada).
  • Penton made 11 saves in the first period, nine in the second and 13 in the third.
  • Junior Nick Nault (Goffstown, NH) led the Huskies with five shots.
  • Brent Rickett led the Wildcats with six shots.
Up Next: The Huskies will play another NEHC game tomorrow at 4PM against UMass Boston.
