Tom Loveitt ’80 To Receive Drew Service Award from Huskies’ Athletics

LOVEITT WILL BE HONORED AS PART OF THE 2022 HUSKY HALL OF FAME BANQUET & CEREMONY

GORHAM, Maine – A 1980 graduate from the University of Southern Maine with a degree in Business and Pre-Engineering, Tom Loveitt '80 is the 2022 recipient of the David F. Drew III Service Award.  The David F. Drew III Service Award is presented to a member of the Husky community who distinguishes themselves with volunteer service to thee athletic department.  This award is exceptionally prestigious from USM Athletics, as without its numerous volunteers, dedicated employees and community members, Husky teams, student-athletes and coaches would not have achieved their levels of success.

Nearly 30 years into his career as an Audio Engineer and Salesperson with Canfield Systems, Inc. –  a Maine business located in nearby Scarborough, Maine in operation since the 1940s that specializes in Education, Healthcare and Industry Communication systems – Loveitt's dedication to his alma mater has been closely linked with his professional expertise. If you attended any number of Southern Maine Athletics sponsored events from game days, William B. Wise Scholar Athlete Banquets to most recently our on-the-field National Championship ring ceremony recognizing men's track and field pole vault national champion Ben Drummey, you have literally heard Loveitt's work over the audio systems.

"Tom is person that has played an extremely critical role in the success and operation of our facilities with a variety of sound systems. He is incredibly knowledgeable, creative and he has been effective in saving us money over the years,  and in upgrading our systems so that we've been able to provide a better quality product for our student-athletes and fans at an affordable rate," said Director of Athletics Al Bean. "Tom is completely committed to his profession and USM Athletics is fortunate to have his commitment and expertise as part of our regular operations."

From installation and fine tuning, to rushing over to assist with a set-up or a glitch before a major event, Loveitt has continued to contribute his time and efforts to ensure Huskies' Athletics, its student-athletes and fans have a top-of-the-line experience. Over the years, Loveitt's expertise and dedication to Husky athletics has been on display in each of the USM Athletic facilities. He has taken old systems and retrofitted them, redesigned, and reworked nearly every part of the Costello Sports Complex as well as the Huskies' baseball, softball stadiums and Hannaford Field.

"Tom has been a McGuyver of sorts for us, and has nearly been like having an on-call expert available for our sound systems.  His work with our sound system in Hill Gymnasium is truly remarkable.  Our current system is from 1962, which was, at the time state of the art, but Tom's skill and ability has kept that system functioning and adapted to newer technology as each season passes."
