GORHAM, Maine – As part of the 2022 University of Southern Maine Homecoming and Family Weekend activities, October 14-15, Huskies' Athletics will dedicate and rename to of its critical facilities after legends in USM Athletics: David "Dusty" F. Drew and Joey Bouchard. Both pillars in the history of USM Athletics, the Athletic Healthcare Facility will be named after David Drew, while the Fitness and Wellness Center located inside of the Costello Sports Complex will be named after Joey Bouchard.
Family members from both the Drew and Bouchard families gather to honor both former long-time Huskies' Athletics employees who gave so much to the University, the Athletic Department and its student-athletes. The David F. "Dusty" Drew Athletic Healthcare Facility will be dedicated at 5:00 pm, and the Joey Bouchard Fitness and Wellness Center will be dedicated at 5:30 pm. A joint reception will follow at 6 pm in the Alumni Reception Center located in the USM Ice Arena. USM President Jackie Edmondson, Athletic Director
Al Bean and several former student-athletes will make remarks at each event.
"Both of these men made significant contributions and positively impacted the lives of so many during their time in Gorham," noted Director of Athletic
Al Bean – who played baseball under Drew. "I am grateful to be able to gather with friends, family and alumni to honor them for their achievements."
Bouchard coached three varsity programs during his 20 years of service at USM. Coming to then Gorham State College in 1968, he piloted the men's soccer program for six seasons and the baseball team for five of the next six seasons. His soccer teams combined for a 27-39-8 record while his baseball clubs were 31-48. Bouchard is best known for leading the men's basketball program for 14 seasons (1973-87). When he left for USM after the 1986-87 season, Bouchard had won more games (222) than any other coach in the history of that program. He led his teams to nine NAIA postseason tournament berths, including trips to the national tournament in 1978 and 1979. His 1985-86 team, the school's first as a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), was selected to play in the ECAC tournament.
A member of the Huskies' Athletic Department since 1972, Drew served USM and its student-athletes in a variety of roles: coach, athletic trainer, equipment manager, faculty member and academic coordinator. Drew coached the baseball program for 12 seasons (1973, 1975-1985). His teams compiled a 206-143 record (.590) highlighted by five trips to the NAIA Area tournament and a berth in the NAIA World Series in his final season. The 1985 team had a 26-7 record, including a 19-game winning streak that culminated in the team winning the NAIA Area Five tournament to clinch the World Series berth. In 11 of his 12 seasons as head coach, Drew's team compiled a .500 or better record.
