Southern Maine Wins Regular Season Championship and Secures No. 1 Seed for Upcoming Little East Conference Tournament

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Ashley Tinsman (Cape Elizabeth Maine/Cape Elizabeth) went 5-for-9 at the plate with two doubles and four RBI as the University of Southern Maine Huskies swept the Plymouth State Panthers on Saturday afternoon in Plymouth. The Huskies won game one 9-0 and took game two 4-2.       

With the wins, Southern Maine clinched the regular season Little East Conference championship and secured the number one seed for the conference tournament for the first time since 1998. This year's tournament will be played in two pods at the sites of the number one and two seeds. USM will act as host for the first five games of the tournament in one pod, which will take place on May 11 and 13.

GAME ONE: Southern Maine 9, Plymouth State 0
  • Southern Maine grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a pair of singles from junior Kaitlyn Nelson (Guildhall, Vermont/White Mountains Regional) and Tinsman
  • Sophomore Hannah Shields (Buckfield, Maine/Buckfield) expanded the Huskies lead to 3-0 with a bases-loaded single in the top of the third, scoring Tinsman. 
  • Plymouth State threatened to get on the board with a runner on second in the bottom of the third, but Tinsman made a remarkable inning-ending play, throwing out the Panthers' senior Mina Shaw attempting to steal third.
  • Lauren Leidemann-Smith (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) knocked an RBI double to left-center in the top of the sixth. She was one of four Huskies to collect hits during a four-run inning.
  • Shields, senior Erin Martin (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford), and Tinsman connected with a pair of singles and a double, respectively, as the Huskies tacked on two more runs in the seventh.
  • Graduate student Kirsten Pelletier (West Gardiner, Maine/Messalonskee) picked up her 12th win of the season to improve her record to an impressive 12-0. She allowed three hits and three walks while striking out three. Plymouth State's starter, graduate student Caitlyn Miller took the loss, giving up two earned runs on ten hits and two walks.
  • Plymouth State's Shaw and freshmen Alexis Michon and Vanessa Bryan all had a hit for the Panthers.
 
GAME TWO: Southern Maine 4, Plymouth State 2
  • Plymouth State struck first in game two as Shaw singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. 
  • The Panthers expanded their lead to 2-0 in the second on a bases-loaded groundout from Michon, that scored junior Lauren Archambault.
  • Southern Maine answered back, taking a 3-2 lead in the top of the third with a pair of doubles from Leidemann-Smith and freshman Madison Day (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) and singles from Tinsman and Shields. 
  • The score remained for the next four innings until senior Samantha Hauck (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning Painted Post) hit her fifth home run of the season and second in two days to give the Huskies a 4-2 lead.
  • Senior Alexis Brown (Malden, Mass./Madlen) earned her 11th win on the season, allowing one earned run on three hits and four walks. The Panthers' starting pitcher Michon gave up four earned runs on nine hits, moving her season record to 8-4.
Inside the Stats:
  • Tinsman, who set a new single-season RBI record in yesterday's doubleheader against Castleton, added four more RBI today, bringing her season total to 48. 
  • Shields finished the day going 4-for-7 with two RBI and a run scored, moving her season batting average to .338.
  • Pelletier and Brown combined for eight strikeouts on the day, bringing their combined season total to 136. 
Up Next:
  • The Huskies await the Little East Conference tournament, for which they have secured the number one seed and will host games on May 11 and 13. 
  • Plymouth State will travel to Western Connecticut tomorrow for an LEC doubleheader beginning at 1:30pm.
