DANBURY, Conn. – Senior

Brynn Hink (Porter, Maine/Sacopee) and
Kaitlyn Nelson (Guildhall, Vermont/White Mountains Regional) and freshman
Madison Day (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) each drove in three runs as the University of Southern Maine Huskies picked up two wins on the road 8-4, 8-0 (5 innings) over Western Connecticut State University in a non-conference doubleheader Friday afternoon.
With the pair of wins, Southern Maine continues the program's best start and improves to 12-1-1 overall. WestConn is still in search of its first win of the season and is now 0-4.
The Huskies are back in action at home on Sunday (2:00 pm) hosting Western Connecticut in a Little East Conference doubleheader. USM is 4-0 in LEC action. Fans are not permitted at Husky athletic contests at this time, but can follow USM Athletics online at southernmainehuskies.com
GAME ONE: Southern Maine 8, WestConn 4
- Trailing 4-0 in the top of the sixth and with two outs against them, the Huskies rallied for seven runs on five clutch hits and four walks to come from behind for the win. USM took one more run back in the seventh for the 8-4 final.
- Juniors Brynn Hink (Porter, Maine/Sacopee) and Kaitlyn Nelson (Guildhall, Vermont/White Mountains Regional) each had two RBI hits in the pivotal sixth inning. Hink drove in USM's first two runs of the inning with a single to left centert, while Nelson's two-run double to left field tied the score up at 4-4.
- Senior Ashley Tinsman (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), freshman Madison Day (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) and senior Samantha Hauck (Painted Post, NY/Corning Painted Post) each had and RBI in the inning for a 7-4 Husky lead.
- In the top of the seventh, USM freshman Belle Snyder (Epping, NH) made it an 8-4 Husky lead when she and Nelson executed a double-steal, and Snyder used her speed to steal home.
- USM freshman hurler Lauren Merrill (Bethel, Maine/Oxford Hills) earned her third win of the season. Merrill allowed four earned runs on nine hits and three walks, and struck out four. Graduate student Kirsten Pelletier (West Gardiner, Maine/Messalonksee) picked up the save. Relieving Merrill after a runner reached safely on an error and a double put runners on on second and third with no outs, Pelletier issued a walk to load the bases. She then got a pop out, and let the Huskies' defense do the rest turning two to secure the win.
- WestConn led USM 4-0 after scoring two runs in the home half of the first and third innings. Freshman Ivy Santos (West Haven, Conn./Newton) had a two-run single through the right side in the first, and senior Annie Rosa (Washington, Conn./Shepaug Valley) knocked a two-run home run to left field in the third.
- Santos was tagged with the loss for WestConn. She allowed five earned runs on seven hits and four walks in 5.2 innings.
GAME TWO: Southern Maine 8, WestConn 0 (5inn)
- Tinsman and Day each had two RBI as the Huskies' used a big six-run second inning to earn an 8-0 win in the second game of the doubleheader. The game was called in the fifth inning due to the eight-run rule.
- Tinsman was 3-for-3 at the plate, while sophomore Rona Scott (Beverly, Mass.) was 2-for-2, and Snyder went 2-for-3 to lead a 13-hit attack for USM.
- Snyder also picked up the win in the circle for the Huskies. Earning her first collegiate win, Snyder did not give up a run and allowed just two hits in five innings. She struck out three and did not yield a walk.
- USM combined six hits, and a WestConn error into six runs in the second inning to do a bulk of the damage in the game. Scott and Hink had back-to-back RBI singles to start the scoring, while Tinsman and senior Alexis Brown (Malden, Mass.) also had consecutive RBI singles to make it 4-0. Day capped the rally with two-out two-run double to left center for a 6-0 lead.
- USM added two more in the third with another RBI hit from Tinsman and an RBI single from Nelson.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- USM has scored 80 runs in 14 games, and are hitting .342 as a team. Tinsman leads the way, batting .458 with 19 RBI.
- Tinsman finished the doubleheader 4-for-8 with two runs scored and three RBI. Nelson was 3-for-7 with three RBI. Snyder and Scott both went 3-for-6. Snyder had three runs scored . Scott had a double and RBI and a run scored.
- Husky pitchers have a combined ERA of 1.62 in 95 innings. Opponents are hitting .258 against USM pitchers. Pelletier leads the way with a 4-0 record, a save and a 0.76 ERA. Brown is also 4-0 with a 1.83 ERA
