Hauck Drives in Five Runs For Huskies

GORHAM, Maine – Senior Samantha Hauck (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning Painted Post) drove in five runs, and sophomore Rona Scott (Beverly, Mass.) went 4-for-5 at the plate with four RBI as the University of Southern Maine Huskies used pair of solid pitching efforts and timely hitting to take a pair of Little East Conference wins over Western Connecticut State Sunday afternoon at the USM Softball stadium.   USM defeated WestConn 12-4 (6 innings) in game one, and then took game two 6-1 for the sweep.
            With the pair of wins, Southern Maine continues the program's best start and improves to 14-1-1 overall, and are no 6-0 in LEC action  WestConn is still in search of its first win of the season and is now 0-6, 0-4 LEC.  USM is 4-0 against WestConn this season.     
            The Huskies are back in action at home on Tuesday (4:00 pm) hosting Saint Joseph's College (Maine) in a non-conference doubleheader. Fans are not permitted at Husky athletic contests at this time, but can follow USM Athletics online at southernmainehuskies.com
 
GAME ONE: Southern Maine 12, WestConn 4 (6 inn)
  • Hauck hit a three-run home run over the left field fence as part of a four-run second inning as USM jumped ahead early versus WestConn.  Scott drove in the first run of the game with a single.
  • The Huskies added five more runs in the bottom of the fifth to lead 9-0.  Scott and Hauck each drove in a run with singles, while senior Alexis Brown (Malden, Mass.), freshman Hannah Shields (Buckfield, Maine) and junior Kaitlyn Nelson (Guildhall, Vermont/White Mountains Regional) each had an RBI. 
  • WestConn came back with four runs in the top of the fourth to cut its deficit to 9-4. Senior Annie Rosa (Washington, Conn.) started the rally with a two-run single up the middle.  Freshman Rachael Ushka (Southbury, Conn.) drove in the final two runs of the inning stroking a two-run, two-out double to left.
  • After a scoreless fifth, USM scored three in the bottom of the sixth to invoke the eight-run rule. Brown and sophomore Lauren Leidemann-Smith (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) each had RBI doubles, while Scott ended the game with an RBI single to right field for the decisive 12th run.
  • USM graduate student Kirsten Pelletier (West Gardiner, Maine/Messalonskee) picked up her fifth win to improve to 5-0. She scattered eight hits and a walk over six innings to allow four earned runs.  She struck out six
  • WestConn graduate student Sara Tenke (Glen Cove, N.Y) took the loss allowing eight runs (seven earned) in 2.0 innings.  She gave up five hits and a walk in the period.   
GAME TWO: Southern Maine 6, WestConn 1
  • After giving up a solo home run in the top of the first, Brown settled into her role and picked up her fifth win of the season.  Pitching seven full, Brown matched her season and career high with eight strikeouts in the win.  She allowed one earned run on six hits and three walks to improve to 5-0.
  • Rosa put WestConn on the board first nailing a solo home run over left field.  Rosa's second home run of the season came with two outs.
  • The Huskies left seven runners on base over the next three innings before scoring an equalizing run in the bottom of the fourth. Shields led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on an error.  Shields came around to score on an RBI single up the middle from Scott.
  • USM scored four runs in the fifth as Leidemann-Smith came through with a two-run double, battling back from an 0-2 count.  Senior Ashley Tinsman (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) led off the inning with a single, and freshman Madison Day (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) had a single through the left side to set up Leidemann-Smith. 
  • In the sixth, Day hit a long sacrifice fly to centerfield for USM's sixth and final run.  Day's sacrifice hit scored Tinsman who reached safely with a double. 
  • In the top of the seventh, Brown stayed steady working around a one-out single to secure the win. 
INSIDE THE STATS:
  • USM has outscored its opponents 21-1 in the second inning this season.
  • Led by Hauck's five and Scott's four, four Huskies had at least two RBI in the doubleheader.  Brown had two and Leidemann-Smith had three
  • Brown finished the LEC doubleheader with WestConn 5-for-8 with one run scored and two RBI.  She also pitched USM to a game-two win.  She is 5-0 with a 1.63 ERA in 30 innings.  She has 28 strikeouts this season. 
  • Day finished the doubleheader 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.  The Huskies' freshman is hitting .396 (19-for-48) with six doubles and 10 RBI. 
  • USM has outscored its opponents 102-41.  Tinsman leads six Huskies with at least 10 RBI with 19.  Hauck (15), Brown (11), Leidemann-Smith (11), Day (10) and Nelson (10) are the rest.
