BOSTON –Senior
Alexis Brown (Malden, Mass.) was 4-for-7 at the plate with five RBI and fired a five-inning, one-hit shutout win in game two highlighting a Little East Conference doubleheader sweep for the University of Southern Maine Huskies over the UMass Boston Beacons Tuesday evening in Boston. The Huskies won game one 11-5 and took game two 8-0 in five innings.
With the sweep of the Beacons, Southern Maine has won 14 in a row and has matched the program record for consecutive wins in a season. USM won 14 straight from March 31, 198 (Wisconsin-Green Bay) through April 24, 1987 (Bowdoin College). USM is now 24-1-1; its most wins since the 2004 season when the Huskies finished 33-11-1.

GAME ONE: Southern Maine 11, UMass Boston 5
- Southern Maine scored six runs in the top of the fifth and added three more in the top of the seventh to break open a 2-2 game and earn an 11-5 win in the opening win of an LEC doubleheader over the Beacons. USM collected 14 hits in the win, including five for extra bases.
- Brown, senior Samantha Hauck (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning Painted Post) and sophomore Rona Scott each had two RBI for the Huskies. Hauck had a two-run home run as part of the Huskies' six-run fifth inning.
- USM fell behind 1-0 to UMB early as senior Kelly Danahy connected on a double down the right field line and came around to score on a misplayed ball. The Huskies came back to take the lead in the third on a two-run double from Brown for a 2-1 score; however, Danahy struck again for an RBI to even the score in the home half of the third.
- After a scoreless fourth, USM broke the game open in the fifth to lead 8-2. Senior Ashley Tinsman (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) scored on a wild pitch for the go-ahead run, before Scott hit a two-run double to right and freshman Hannah Shields (Buckfield, Maine) knocked in another with a single to right. Up 6-2, Hauck's homer made it 8-2.
- The Beacons scored three in the home half of the fifth highlighted by an RBI double from Danahy, but USM closed out the game with an RBI double from senior Erin Martin (Biddeford, Maine), an RBI triple from junior Kaitlyn Nelson (Guildhall, Vermont/White Mountains Regional) and an RBI single from Tinsman.
- Graduate student Kirsten Pelletier (West Gardiner, Maine/Messalonskee) earned her ninth win of the season to improve to 9-0. She allowed three earned runs on seven hits and three walks and struck out four. UMB starter freshman Brianna Melchionda (Marshfield, Mass.) took the loss allowing eight earned runs in 4.2 innings. She gave up seven hits and four walks and struck out four.
GAME TWO: Southern Maine 8, UMass Boston 0 (5 inning)
- Brown allowed just one hit and a walk and struck out eight to improve to 9-0, earning her fourth shut out victory of the season. Brown was equally as effective at the plate going 2-for-3, including a triple, with three RBI and a run scored.
- USM collected 14 hits, five for extra bases, in game two. Martin (3), Tinsman (2), Brown (2), Scott (2) and sophomore Lauren Leidemann-Smith (2) (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) each had multiple hits for the Huskies.
- USM struck early scoring three runs each in the top of the first and second for a quick 6-0 lead. Brown tripled to the left field gap to score the first two runs of the game, before Leidemann-Smith brought Brown around with an RBI single to left.
- In the second, Hauck doubled to left for an RBI, while Tinsman knocked in a run with a single through the left side. Brown added another run with an RBI double.
- With Brown dominating the circle, USM scored the decisive eighth run in third on a two-run single through the left side from Nelson.
- Brown earned three of her eight strikeouts in the fourth and fifth inning to secure the win. After yielding a double in the bottom of the first, Brown retired nine consecutive batters before yielding a two-out walk in the bottom of the fourth, and then came back to get the four straight.
Inside the Stats:
- Tinsman finished the doubleheader 4-for-7 with four runs scored and two RBI. She now has 38 RBI this season and is tied for third in USM single season records with former All-American Julie Plant. She needs 41 to tie and 42 to establish a new mark.
- Brown now has 32 wins in her career and is sixth all-time in USM records. She is eighth in career strikeouts with 232.
