Huskies Take Two From Colby: 4-1, 8-3

Tinsman Knocks in Five RBI; Brown & Pelletier Strong Starts

WATERVILLE, Maine – Senior Ashley Tinsman (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) was 4-for-9 at the plate over two games, connecting for a pair of doubles, a home run and driving in five runs, while senior Alexis Brown (Malden, Mass.) and graduate student Kirsten Pelletier (West Gardiner, Maine/Messalonskee) each turned in strong performances in the circle as the University of Southern Maine Huskies opened its 2021 season with a sweep of the Colby College Mules Sunday afternoon at the Colby Softball Field.
            Southern Maine won the opener 4-1, and then took game two 8-3 to start its season 2-0.  Colby is 0-2 with the pair of losses.  Southern Maine hosts UMaine Farmington on Wednesday, March 24 in a non-conference doubleheader.  The non-conference match up starts at 2:00 pm.  Fans are not permitted at the USM Softball Stadium.
 
GAME ONE: Southern Maine 4, Colby 1
  • With the score knotted up at 1-1 in the top of the seventh, Tinsman connected on her first home run of the season sending a three-run blast over the center field fence to put the Huskies up 4-1. Freshman Madison Day (Otisfield, Maine/Ox led off the inning with a double, and advanced to third on a ground out.  Junior Kaitlyn Nelson (Guildhall, Vermont/White Mountains Regional) drew a one-out walk to set up Tinsman for the big play at the plate.
 
  • In the bottom half of the inning, Pelletier worked her way around three singles to close out the game and earn her first win as a Husky.  After getting a ground out to start the inning, Pelletier allowed two singles to left.  She then secured a fly out to right before another Colby single, this time from freshman Lauren Ilano (Mission Vejo, Calif.) loaded the bases.  Pelletier closed the inning with another ground out.  
  • Pelletier finished the game going seven full allowing one run, unearned.  She yielded seven hits (three in the top of the seventh) and one walk, while striking out six.
 
  • Sophomore Lauren Leidemann-Smith (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) drove in the Huskies first run of the game with a single to left field in the top of the third.  Nelson led off the inning with a one-out single and moved to third on a double from Tinsman.  A single from Brown loaded the bases and Leidemann-Smith delivered with her first Husky RBI to score Nelson.
 
 
  •  Colby tied the score up in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Amanda Cabral (Whitier, Calif.) led off the inning with a single and was lifted for a pinch runner freshman Hannah Masterson (Plymouth, Mass.).  Masterson came around to score after a single from sophomore Brenna Forbes (Medford, Mass.) moved her to third and then touched home on a passed ball.
 
GAME TWO: Southern Maine 8, Colby 3
  • Tinsman, senior Samantha Hauck (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning Painted Post) and sophomore Rona Scott (Beverly,Mass.) each had two RBIs to lead the Huskies to an 8-3 win in the second half of a doubleheader.
 
  • Brown, the Huskies' starting pitcher, had a strong day in the circle earning the win.  Brown threw six innings allowing one earned run on six hits and three walks.  She struck out six.
 
  • Scott, Day and Brown each had RBI singles in the top of the first inning to give USM a 3-0 cushion early.  The Huskies made it 4-0 in the fourth on an RBI fielder's choice from Tinsman.
 
  • Colby junior Ashley Ketchum (Tucson, Ariz.) took one back for the Mules with an RBI ground out in the fifth. Ketchum's grounder drove in freshman Chloe Wilcox (Windham, Maine) who led off the inning with a triple to left center.
 
  • The Huskies added another run in the sixth on another RBI single from Scott, and three more in the seventh to lead 8-1 headed to the bottom of the inning. Hauck had a two-run single and Tinsman doubled in another run for the Huskies in the inning.
  • In the seventh, Husky freshman Lauren Merrill (Bethel, Maine/Oxford Hills) relieved Brown in the circle. Merrill was touched for two runs on four hits, all singles.  After allowing the two runs, Merrill settled and got the final out with a K.  Ketchum and Cabral had RBI singles for the Mules in the seventh.
 
Inside the Stats:
  • Seven players had at least two hits for the Huskies led by four each from Brown and Tinsman.  Scott and Day each had three.  Brown was 4-for-6 with an RBI in addition to earning the win in game two.
  • Led by Tinsman's five RBI, three Huskies had at least two runs driven in.  Scott and Hauck each had two RBI.  Scott finished the doubleheader 3-for-6 with a double , Hauck was 2-for-5.
  • The Huskies combined for a 1.50 earned run average over two games.  Pelletier did not yield an earned run in her Husky debut and did not give up an extra base hit, while Brown, earning her 27th career win, had a 1.17 ERA.
