Southern Maine Sweeps UMaine Farmington 3-0, 14-0 (5 inn)

Huskies Start 4-0 for the First Time Since 1999

GORHAM, Maine – A pair of strong pitching performances from graduate student Kirsten Pelletier (West Gardiner, Maine/Messalonskee) and senior Alexis Brown (Malden, Mass.) were bolstered by 25 hits over two games for the University of Southern Maine as the Huskies took a non-conference doubleheader sweep of the UMaine Farmington Beavers Wednesday afternoon at the USM Softball Stadium.
With the pair of wins, Southern Maine moves to 4-0.  It is the first time since the 1999 season that the Huskies have started with four consecutive wins. In 1999, USM started its season 5-0 and finished with a 29-21 record, advancing to the NCAA tournament.  UMaine Farmington, playing in its first games of the season, is 0-2.
Freshman Madison Day (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills), sophomore Rona Scott (Beverly, Mass.) and junior Kaitlyn Nelson (Guildhall, Vermont/White Mountains) had three hits a piece for the Huskies.  Senior Ashley Tinsman (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) drove in four runs, including her second home run of the season.  Of the Huskies 25 hits over two games, 10 were for extra bases: eight doubles, a triple and Tinsman's home run.

GAME ONE: Southern Maine 3, UMaine Farmington 0
  • Pelletier earned her second win in as many games for the Huskies, firing seven full in USM's 3-0 opening game win. Pelletier scattered three hits (all singles) and a walk, and struck out six.
  • Junior Broghan Gagnon (Winslow, Maine) and freshman Madelyn Souza (Mashpee, Mass.) combined to keep the Huskies off the scoreboard until the bottom of the fifth. Gagnon started the game and went two innings allowing two hits and no runs, while Souza took the loss firing the final four inning, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits.  Neither Gagnon or Souza issued a walk.
  • Brown, Day, sophomore Lauren Leidemann-Smith (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) and senior Samantha Hauck (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning Painted Post) each hit doubles for USM as part of a nine hit attack.
  • The Huskies broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth. Hauck led off with a double and was pinch run for by senior Kayla Horner (Westbrook, Maine). Horner game around to score on a error.  UMF avoided any further damage in the inning turning a double play with a line out to shortstop freshman Emma Campbell (Corinth, Maine/Central) who promptly picked off the Huskies with a throw over to first.
  • USM tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth with three doubles, including back-to-back RBI doubles from Day and Leidemann-Smith.  Brown led off the inning with a double
  • Pelletier kept the Beaver bats silent to earn the win. After giving up a pair of singles in the top of the fourth, Pelletier retired the next 10 UMF hitters in order.

GAME TWO: Southern Maine 14, UMaine Farmington 0 (5 inn)
  • The Huskies jumped on top early, batting around their lineup, scoring seven runs in the first and six in the second en route to a five-inning, eight-run rule, 14-0 win over the Beavers.
  • Senior Erin Martin (Biddeford, Maine) had a double, an RBI single and a run scored in the first as the Huskies lead off.  USM had seven hits in the first inning
  • In the second, USM had five hits including a two-run triple from Nelson and a two-run home run from Tinsman.
  • The Huskies tacked on one more run in the fourth, on an RBI pinch-hit double from freshman Jazmin Clary (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner) for the 14-0 final.
  • Brown and freshman Lauren Merrill (Bethel, Maine/Oxford Hills) combined for the five-hit shut out.  Brown pitched the first three innings, allowing two singles and striking out two.  Merrill finished the final two, allowing one single and also picking up a pair of strikeouts.
