Nassif Picks up Singles Win as Huskies fall to Spartans

RUTLAND, V.T.-- The Castleton University Spartans swept the doubles points and all but one of the singles points on their way to an 8-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in Rutland on Saturday. With the win, Castleton moves to 5-7 on the season, 1-5 in the Little East Conference, while the Huskies drop to 0-9 overall and 0-7 in the Little East Conference.

In the most competitive doubles match of the day, senior captain Emma Nassif (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and sophomore Kenadi Sawyer (Windham, Maine/Windham) challenged the Spartans' Regina Marchese (Sunderland, V.T.) and Grace Sharkey (Purling, N.Y.) at first doubles, but ultimately fell 8-5. Sophomore Maggie Brock (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) and junior Audrey Richdale (Brewer, Maine/Brewer) dropped their match at second doubles 8-0 to Megan Hunt (Albany, N.Y.) and Makayla Boisvert (Barre, V.T.). The Huskies forfeited the match at third doubles.

Nassif continued her impressive season at first singles, picking up her sixth individual win of the season with a 6-1, 4-6 (10-0) victory over Marchese. The win puts Nassif tied for third in the conference for most wins at first singles. Sawyer, Richdale, and Jordan Cote (Hope, Maine/Camden Hills Regional) dropped their matches at second, fourth, and fifth singles 6-0, 6-0 to Hunt, Megan Brier (Barre, V.T.), and Mia Manheimer (Norwich, V.T.), respectively. At third singles, Brock gave Sharkey a challenge in the first set, before dropping her match 6-2, 6-0. The Huskies forfeited the match at sixth singles.

The Huskies are back in action Tuesday, October 12 as they travel to UMass-Boston for a conference match scheduled for 3pm.
