Volleyball Falls to Keene State, Trinity in Final Away Tri-Match

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 KEENE, NH – The University of Southern Maine women's volleyball team headed out on the road for their final away tri-match and suffered two defeats, a 3-0 decision to Little East Conference opponent and regionally-ranked Keene State University while losing 3-0 to non-conference opponent Trinity College (Conn.) in the second match.
 
When and Where: Saturday, October 23, 2021 – Keene State University – Spaulding Gymnasium
 
Game One Score: Owls 3, Huskies 0 (14-25, 12-25, 21-25)
 
Game One History: This was the 26th meeting between the two programs. Keene State leads the series 20-6.
 
The Records: Southern Maine: 11-13, 2-5 LEC; Keene State: 15-9, 4-3 LEC
 
Game One Standout Husky: sophomore outside hitter Brianna Delloiacono (Moodus, CT): game-high 13 kills, .323 hitting percentage, nine digs.
 
Game One Standout Owl: Sydney Johnson: 12 kills, 10 digs, double-double, three aces, two assists. 
 
How It Happened, Game One: 
 
-Freshman outside hitter Alizia Lagando (Huron, OH) brought her team within 9-5 with a kill midway through the set. From there the hosts used a 7-1 scoring spurt to push ahead 16-6 against the Huskies. A senior setter Sophie Lindsay (Sierra Madre, CA) point and two Delloiacono kills put USM down seven 16-9. Trailing, 20-10 Delloiacono produced two kills with an Owl attack error to again bring her squad within seven, 20-13. Keene State would eventually win the set 25-14.
 
-The Huskies drew an early 2-0 edge getting a senior right side hitter Kim Grant (Saco, ME) kill. Keene State put up six in a row to regain the lead at 6-2 using two Cassidy Samuelson kills and an ace with two Ali McLoughlin kills. Back-to-back attack errors put the Huskies within one at 6-5. From there the Owls racked up six straight markers to move in front 12-5. With the set 13-7 in favor of the Owls, KSU dropped a kill and two Kacie Blanchet aces to hold a 10 point, 17-7 advantage. Johnson eventually chipped in another ace to double up the Huskies 20-10 before taking the set 25-12.
 
-In the third set, Southern Maine jumped ahead 6-4 via a sophomore defensive specialist Tori McMahon (Wappingers Falls, NY) ace. USM expanded their lead to three, 12-9 when Delloiacono converted a kill on the left side. Behind 14-11, Keene State put together seven consecutive markers to regain the 18-14 lead. Grant then put her squad behind by two, 19-17 putting home a right side mash. The Huskies kept fighting down four getting a kill and attach error to come within three before the Owls iced the match.
 
Inside The Box Score, Game One: 
 
-Keene State tallied 10 service aces compared to USM's two.
-The Owls outhit the huskies .303-to-.121 in the match.
-Three Owls had double-digit kills in the win.
 
 
Game Two Score: Bantams 3, Huskies 0 (17-25, 22-25, 16-25)
 
Game Two History: This was the 2nd meeting between the two programs. Trinity is 2-0 in the series.
 
The Records: Southern Maine: 11-14; Trinity (Conn.): 9-12
 
Game Two Standout Husky: Brianna Delloiacono: eight kills, six digs, two aces.
 
Game Two Standout Bantam: Eva Lekovic: game-high 13 kills, .500 hitting percentage, two digs, one assist.
 
How It Happened, Game Two: 
 
-The Huskies came out the gate firing building a 7-2 lead in the early going as McMahon placed an ace in the area of Hareena Johnson. The Husky lead improved to a first set high of six due to a Bantam attack error. The Bantams then stormed back to take their first lead putting home 11 straight points to hold an 18-13 edge using three aces in the scoring stretch. Delloiacono pushed the Huskies to be behind three 19-16, but Trinity ended up taking the set 25-17.
 
-Trinity took a 5-1 advantage in the second set when Lekovic banged home a kill. The Huskies leveled the match at 7-7 when Delloiacono notched an ace, a few serves later USM took a 10-8 advantage off the swing of Lagando. A 7-1 Bantam stretch turned their deficit into a lead, 15-11. A Trinity attack miscue put the Huskies down one, 17-16, however, Grace Sullivan made her team's lead four 23-19. The Huskies came within one, 23-22 via a freshman middle blocker Sarah Haggerty (Lisbon, ME) ace, but a bad Husky set and kill by the Bantams wrapped up the second set victory.
 
-USM had a 6-4 edge in the third set before back-to-back attack errors by the navy and gold put Trinity ahead one, 7-6. The Bantams' attack then exploded for an 8-3 burst to have a 15-9 margin. A Delloiacono kill temporarily moved the Huskies within four, but four in a row by their counterparts increased the lead to 20-12. Ava Boloyan tallied an ace to make it a 24-14 lead before the final third set score 25-16.  
 
Inside The Box Score, Game Two: 
 
-Lekovic had six of her 13 kills in the second set where she hit .714.
-Lagando dug out double-digit digs for the 12th time this season.
-McMahon had a career-high three aces in the match.
 
Up Next: The Huskies end their road schedule on Wednesday, October 27th at non-conference foe Bates College with a 7:00 p.m. first serve.
