Box Score

Farley Scores Game-Winning Goal at 1:06 of the 2nd OT Period

GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Alex Farley (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) scored on a free-position attempt at 1:06 of the second sudden-victory overtime period to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies a 17-16 win over the visiting University of New England Nor'easters Wednesday afternoon at Hannaford Field.  The game was the season opener for the Huskies.

Down 16-13 with 8:30 remaining in regulation after a string of four consecutive UNE goals, the Huskies scored the next three goals, all by senior Megan Violette (Portland, Maine/Deering), to tie the game.

Both sides had good looks in the final 41 seconds before heading into overtime.  USM sophomore Evelyn Hinkley (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) was stopped by UNE first-year goalie Madison Bruzzese (Reading, Mass.) with 20 seconds to play, and UNE sophomore Nicole Corriveau (Colchester, Vt.) rang a shot off the crossbar at the buzzer.

After a scoreless six-minute overtime period, the teams began the second overtime with USM junior goalie Mariah Vaillancourt (Lewiston, Maine/Edward Little) saving a shot from UNE junior Casey Conwell (North Andover, Mass.) in the opening 20 seconds.  USM successfully cleared the ball and Farley was eventually awarded a free-position attempt.  The junior converted for her fifth goal of the game giving USM its first win over UNE since the 2013 season.

Farley led the Huskies' offense with five goals.  Violette and sophomore Rachel Shanks (Naples, Maine/Lake Region) each finished with four goals and one assist.  Vaillancourt made a career-high 17 saves in the goal picked up five ground balls.

Junior Molly Camelo (Melrose, Mass.) led the Nor'easters with five goals.  First-year Emily Jussaume (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and senior Anna Stowell (Sutton, N.H.) each contributed four goals, and sophomore Katelyn Nartiff (Londonderry, N.H.) chipped in with two goals.  Jussaume dominated around the center circle collecting 17 draw controls.  Bruzzese had eight saves in 56:46 of action.  Junior Taylor Hopkins (Pelham, N.Y.) started the second half and made one save in 10:20 before Bruzzese re-entered the contest.

Southern Maine is back in action on Saturday (12 p.m.) hosting Saint Joseph's College for a non-conference match.  UNE, 1-1 on the season, host Bridgewater State University for a non-conference game on Friday (4 p.m.).
