GORHAM, Maine - A 1977 graduate from the University of Southern Maine with a degree in Business Administration, Ralph Hendrix has gone on to have an incredibly successful career as a Certified Public Accountant, all while consistently contributing his time and talents to his community and to USM and its athletic department. A member of the USM Athletic Development Council and former chair of the University's Corporate Partners, Hendrix is the 2020 recipient of the Clifford O.T. Weiden award, which honors individuals who, or businesses from the community that, contribute special talents and time to the University.Â
As a member of the Athletic Development Council, Hendrix has served in an advisory role to the department. Made up of department staff members, university officials, alumni, and other community members, Hendrix has been an Athletic Development Council leader since its inception, serving on marketing subcommittees, event planning, and using his background in accounting to assist with fundraising.Â
"Ralph has served on our Athletic Development Council for many years and has been one of our key leaders, helping us to raise funds, participating in special events, spreading the word about the program, and encouraging others to get involved," said Al Bean, Director of Athletics. "I am very thankful to have Ralph's guidance and involvement with our program; we owe him a debt of gratitude for all he has done for USM Athletics and I can't thank him enough."
Previously recognized for his valuable contributions to his alma mater, Hendrix is a former recipient of the USM Alumni Association's Hilltop Award, presented to distinguished alumni. As a member and former chair of USM Corporate Partners, Hendrix worked with local businesses and the university to better understand the needs of Maine's workforce and develop creative solutions that benefit and assist both Maine business and USM students. Â
With a passion for service beyond USM, Hendrix volunteers with numerous community organizations. For the last eight years, Hendrix has served on the board of the Boys and Girls Club of Southern Maine, and has served as chair of their Kids and Claws fundraiser for the last decade.
Hendrix is also a dedicated volunteer with Crossroads and Day One -Â mental health organizations in Southern Maine. For all of his work, Hendrix was awarded the Unsung Hero Award from Crossroads and the Community Leadership Award from Day One. Hendrix received this honor due to his "enthusiasm, energy and commitment as a dedicated volunteer and community leader."Â
"Ralph Hendrix is someone who has always given of himself and given back to his community. He has been incredibly active in youth and charitable organizations throughout his professional life and has served on countless boards, helping to raise awareness and raise funds to support organizations that he believes in," said Bean.
The department will call on Hendrix again for his guidance during the University's upcoming capital campaign. This campaign will focus on three main projects for the department. Renovating Ed Flaherty Jr. Field, expanding the Athletic Health Care Facility, and upgrading the Costello Sports Complex's fitness center. Hendrix's financial expertise, community ties, and passion for USM athletics will be a major asset to the department as the campaign moves forward.
