Huskies Back in Action On Sunday Hosting Emerson

GORHAM, Maine -- The visiting Bridgewater State University Bears swept all nine matches to take a 9-0 Little East Conference victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies at the Gorham High School courts Saturday afternoon.

The Bears improve to 4-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play with their second straight LEC win.  The Huskies dip to 1-6 overall and are winless in conference play through five matches.

Bridgewater State opened the match sweeping the three doubles matches by identical 8-1 margins.  Rookie Sailor Nordstrom (New Bedford, Mass./Bishop Stang) and senior Emma Mills (Westport, Mass./Bishop Stang) combined for the win at number one, grad student Rachel Tarantino (Mansfield, Mass.) and senior Angelique Gray (Barnstable, Mass.) prevailed at number two, and junior Olivia Sweeney (Taunton, Mass.) and sophomore Vanessa Rosa (Taunton, Mass.) won the point at number three.

The best match of the day came at number one singles where Nordstrom and USM senior Samantha Harden (Turner, Maine/Leavitt Area) split the first two sets before Nordstrom won the super tiebreaker to take the point with a 2-6, 6-0 (10-7) victory.

Southern Maine will play its third match in three days on Sunday (12 p.m.) hosting Emerson College for a non-conference match at the GHS courts.  Bridgewater State returns to action next Wednesday (3 p.m.) when it hosts the University of Massachusetts Boston in Little East Conference action.
