Huskies Travel to UMass Dartmouth on Friday (3:30 p.m.)
BOSTON -- The University of Massachusetts Boston women's tennis team swept all nine matches Tuesday afternoon to defeat the University of Southern Maine 9-0 in a Little East Conference match at the BC High Tennis Courts.
The win was the fifth straight for the Beacons, improving their record to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in conference matches. The Huskies dropped their fourth straight to fall to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in LEC matches.
Seven players contributed to the Beacons' first conference sweep since 2016. With rookie Amy Drame (Milwaukee, Wis.) and senior Katie Gauthier (West Boylston, Mass.) leading the way from the top of the lineup, the Beacons won all three doubles matches to grab an early 3-0 lead. Drame and Gauthier combined for an 8-1 win at number one doubles over the USM duo of senior Samantha Harden (Turner, Maine/Leavitt Area) and sophomore Emma Nassif (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy).
Drame came back in singles play to defeat Harden, 6-2, 6-2 at number one, and Gauthier downed Nassif 6-3, 6-1 at number two, as the Beacons went on to win all six single matches.
The closet match of the day was at third singles where UMB freshman Evangelia Vassiliadis (Weymouth, Mass.) defeated USM freshman Regina Harmon (Palermo, Maine/Erskine Academy) 6-2, 7-5.
The Huskies begin a stretch of three matches in three days on Friday (3:30 p.m.) traveling to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth for a rescheduled match from September 14th. The Beacons will host Worcester State University on Saturday (1 p.m.). Both matches are Little East Conference matches.
