Huskies Face Westfield State, Oswego on Saturday

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Senior Kyle Golla (Palm Coast, Fla.) hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to snap a 1-1 tie and the 11th-ranked Rowan University Profs went on to defeat the 15th-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies, 9-3, in a non-conference baseball game Friday evening at Lake Myrtle Field.

The win was the seventh straight for the Profs and improved their overall record to 10-1.  The Huskies dropped to 3-4 overall with their second straight loss.

Golla gave the Profs a 1-0 lead in the third inning with an RBI double.  The Huskies tied the game in the fourth when sophomore Dylan Hapworth (Winslow, Maine) hit his first home run of the season.

With one out in the fifth, junior Anthony Harrold (Woodbury, N.J.) walked and junior Dillon Mendel (Sparta, N.J.) followed with a single.  Golla hit an offering from USM junior southpaw Ryan Gaydou (Dartmouth, Mass.) over the left-field fence to give the Profs a 4-1 lead.

USM picked up a run in the bottom half of the fifth on an RBI single from sophomore Anthony Degifico (South Portland, Maine), and another run in the sixth on rookie Sam Troiano's (South Portland, Maine) RBI single to pull within one at 4-3.

Rowan pulled away in the final three innings scoring five times.  The Profs got one in the seventh when junior Steven Hewa (Galloway, N.J.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.  In the eighth, the Profs took advantage of a walk, stolen base, an infield error, a triple from Harrold and a sacrifice fly to put three runs (two unearned) up on the board.  The final run came in the ninth on rookie Justin Provost's (Hackettstown, N.J.) groundout.

Rowan outhit Southern Maine 13-9 in the game.  Harrold went 4 for 4 and scored four runs, and Golla was 3 for 4 with four RBI.  Sophomore Zach Listro (Swedesboro, N.J.) picked up his first win of the season hurling two shutout innings in relief.

Hapworth and rookie Jason Komulainen (Gorham, Maine) had a pair of hits for the Huskies.  Gaydou, who took the loss, pitched into the seventh inning allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits and four walks while striking out four.

Southern Maine is scheduled to play two games on Saturday taking on Westfield State University (9 a.m.) and SUNY Oswego (1:15 p.m.).  Rowan will close its eight-game Florida swing with a game Saturday (1 p.m.) against Hamilton College.
