STANDISH, Maine -- Junior Kayla Kelly (York, Maine) scored a game-high six goals, including two key insurance markers in the final 10 minutes, to lead the Saint Joseph's College Monks past the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies, 11-7, in a non-conference women's lacrosse game Thursday night at the SJC Athletic Complex.

The win was the third straight this season for the undefeated Monks, and their fourth straight over the Huskies dating back to 2015.  The Huskies slip to 1-2 on the season.

Leading by one (6-5) at halftime, Kelly gave the Monks a two-goal cushion in the opening minute of the second half.  The Huskies countered less than seven minutes later when freshman Alex Farley (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) converted a free-position attempt.

Again, Kelly gave the home side a two-goal lead with 20:24 to play when she scored on a free-position opportunity.  Sophomore Taylor Colangelo (Windham, Maine) pulled the Huskies back within one (8-7) at 15:27 with an unassisted goal, but that would be the last score for the visitors.

Sophomore Madison Beaulieu (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) scored on a free-position attempt at 11:25 to restore the Monks' two-goal lead (9-7), and Kelly added two insurance markers in the final 10 minutes to secure the win.

In the opening half, the teams traded goals with the Monks taking the lead four times, and the Huskies responding to tie the game four times.  Senior Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) snapped the last tie (4-4) at 8:25, and Kelly's second goal of the game gave SJC its first two-goal lead (6-4).

The Huskies got a goal from junior Aliza Jordan (Gorham, Maine) in the final minute of the half to get back within one (6-5) at the intermission.

Junior Kara Kelly (York, Maine) complemented her sister scoring two goals and assisting on one.  Beaulieu and Caiazzo had a goal and an assist.  Kayla Kelly led all players with nine ground balls.

Farley, Jordan and sophomore Allison Irish (Lyman, Maine/Massabesic) had two goals apiece for USM.  Jordan also had a team-high four ground balls, and shared the team lead with rookie Morgan Eliasen (Lewiston, Maine) with four draw controls.

Senior Emma Astbury (Bridgewater, Vt./Woodstock) started in goal for the Monks and allowed four goals and made four saves in the opening 17.26 before giving way to sophomore Kaylin Mansir (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area).  Mansir went the final 42:34 making two saves to earn the win.  Junior Hala Van Nostrand (Granby, Conn.) made nine saves in the Huskies' cage.

Southern Maine is back in action on Sunday (1 p.m.) hosting Colby-Sawyer College. The game will be played at Saint Joseph's College.  Saint Joseph's will look to make it four in a row on Tuesday (4 p.m.) when it hosts Simmons College for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference game.
