HARTFORD, Conn. – Senior Christian McCue (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) and junior Jayvon Pitts-Young (Portland, Maine) combined for 27 points as the University of Southern Maine Huskies fell to the Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham Devils 77-56 in the consolation game of the 2018 Trinity College Holiday Invitational Monday afternoon at Oosting Gymnasium.
With the win, FDU-Florham improves to 4-8 on the season. Dropping its second game at the tourney, Southern Maine is now 3-8 overall.
McCue led the Huskies with 14 points, while Pitts-Young tossed in 13 points, grabbed five rebounds and had two steals. Freshman Evan Christensen (Old Orchard Beach, Maine/Thornton Academy) added seven points and six rebounds, while senior Sean Jany (Westbrook, Maine) had five points, eight rebounds, two blocked shots and a team-high five assists.
Oliver Ortman led the Devils off of the bench with a game-high 17 points, including a 5-for-10 effort from three-point range. FDU-Florham hit 12 threes against the Huskies, shooting 37.5 percent (12-for-32) from long distance. Three more Devils reached double digits, including Darren Davy who went 7-for-13 from the field for 16 points. Andy Fleurantin had 15 points and seven rebounds, while Anthony Mitchell tossed in 12 points.
Suffering from a cold shooting effort in the first half, making 6-of-26 field goals, Southern Maine fell behind the Devils 32-19 at the half. USM was also hampered by 12 first half turnovers to trail FDU-Florham by double-digits at the break. McCue was 4-for-9 for USM in the first half for 10 points to carry the team.
The Huskies fared better in the second stanza, shooting 33.3 percent (12-for-36) including five three-point field goals, but could not overcome the Devils' advantage. Pitts-Young scored 12 of his points in the second half connecting on 4-of-9 from the field.
Southern Maine hosts Keene State College on Saturday (3:00 p.m.) in a Little East Conference game. The Huskies are 1-3 in Little East Conference action.
