Smedberg Goal & Assist Paces Southern Maine Over UMass Dartmouth 2-1

Box Score

GORHAM, Maine - Senior Tayla Smedberg (Oxford, Maine/Oxford Hills) and sophomore Maggie Redman (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) each scored a goal and the University of Southern Maine Huskies held off a surging UMass Dartmouth Corsairs team for a 2-1 win in a Little East Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

With the win, Southern Maine stops a two-game skid to improve to 4-6 overall, and 3-3 in the Little East Conference. The loss drops UMass Dartmouth to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in the conference.  It is the second consecutive loss for the Corsairs.

Redman scored her second goal of the season and the first of the game in the 12th minute to put the Huskies up early 1-0 over the Corsairs.  Redman turned in a terrific hustle play extending her body to get a stick on the ball to deflect a pass from Smedberg.  Despite the early goal, play was even between the two teams and the scored remained 1-0 until the break.

Heading into the second half with a one goal advantage, Smedberg quickly doubled the Huskies' score recording her third goal of the season in the 42nd minute.  Smedberg redirected in a pass from senior Kaitlin Hilton (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) for the eventual game-winner.

Facing a two-goal deficit, the Corsairs pushed back, rallying to cut their disadvantage to one.  Coming off of one of its seven penalty corners, senior Haley Donahay (Cranston, R.I./Pilgrim) made an outstanding play to redirect a driven ball from classmate Erin Kish (Littleton, Mass.).  After the Donahay goal, the Corsairs increased their pressure searching for an equalizer, but the Huskies were able to hold off the charge for the win.

Freshman goalkeeper Anna Huff (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills) earned the win, making three saves.  Huff was helped out by junior Dorina Sirois (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) who made several big defensive play, and recorded a defensive save late in the game.  UMD senior goalkeeper Allison Burke (Franklin, Mass.) made one save in the loss.

Southern Maine returns to action at home against nationally-ranked Bowdoin (3:30 p.m.) on Monday.  UMass Dartmouth travels to Mt. Ida on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.)
