Southern Maine Drops Season Opener at UNE 18-9

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England Nor'easters used a balanced attack to pull away in the second half to defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 18-9, in non-conference women's lacrosse action Thursday at the Big Blue Turf.

The Nor'easters improved to 3-1 on the season.  The game was the season opener for the Huskies.

Paced by sophomore Korinne Bohunsky's (Eliot, Maine) seven points (four goals, three assists), the Nor'easters had six players score two or more goals.  Seniors Jocelyn Davee (Freeport, Maine) and Nichole Carvalho (South Kingstown, R.I.) and rookie Anna Stowell (Sutton, N.H.) added three goals apiece.  Senior Brooke Kelleher (Exeter, N.H.) and junior Jolena Lampron (Lyman, Maine) each contributed two goals.  Kelleher also matched Bohunsky dishing out three assists.

Rookie Ruth Nadeau (Bath, Maine) led the Huskies scoring three goals in her collegiate debut.  Seniors Sam Campobasso (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and Heather Everett (Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) each scored twice and had an assist.  Everett had a fine all-around game collecting six ground balls, six draw controls and caused four UNE turnovers.

UNE pulled away over the final 19 minutes expanding a four-goal lead into a comfortable nine-goal win.  Everett's goal with 19:35 remaining had the Huskies within four (12-8) before UNE tallied four times in a three-minute span to double up on the Huskies (16-8).  Bohunsky scored twice 12 seconds apart to cap off the outburst.

Sophomore goalie Maritza Nary (Dover, N.H.) earned the win for UNE stopping nine shots.  Sophomore Hala Van Nostrand (Granby, Conn.) made 12 saves for USM.

Southern Maine returns to action on Monday (4:00 p.m.) hosting Thomas College.  UNE will travel to Port Charlotte, Florida, to play Vassar College on Tuesday.
