Southern Maine Falls at Bates 16-6
LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College women's lacrosse team scored the first six goals of the game and went on to defeat the University of Southern Maine 16-6 in a non-conference game Tuesday at Garcelon Field.
The win was the third straight for the host Bobcats, and improved their overall record to 6-3. The visiting Huskies had their school record tying four-game winning streak snapped, falling to 4-2 on the season.
Bates juniors Camille Belletete (Jaffrey, N.H.) and Allison Dewey (Vergennes, Vt.), and sophomore Katie Allard (Ridgewood, N.J.), scored three goals apiece, with Belletete and Allard adding assists. Senior Kaileigh Maguire (Sudbury, Mass.) added two goals and junior Melanie Mait (Ogunquit, Maine) contributed a goal and two assists in the win.
Sophomore Aliza Jordan (Gorham, Maine) led the USM offense scoring two goals and dishing out an assist. Senior Lauren Lessard (Lewiston, Maine/Kents Hill), sophomore Kenzie Kidder (Lyman, Maine/Massabesic) and rookie Ruth Nadeau (Bath, Maine) each had a goal and an assist.
The Bobcats put the first six goals up on the board in the opening 17 minutes to grab a 6-0 lead. Dewey had the first and sixth goals in the surge. Belletete, Kaileigh Maguire, Joanie Oates and Allard scored the goals in between.
After Dewey's second goal, the teams went through an 11-plus minutes stretch of scoreless play until USM rookie Allison Irish (Lyman, Maine/Massabesic) scored off a feed from Lessard.
Bates responded with three goals, including two from Belletete, in a span of 38 seconds inside the final minute to expand its lead to 9-1 at the break.
Bates maintained its lead through second half, and led 13-3 before USM scored three consecutive goals to close the gap to 13-6. Allard scored twice within 17 seconds to swing the momentum back to the home side.
Sophomore goalie Hala Van Nostrand (Granby, Conn.) registered seven saves in the USM goal. Bates used two goalies in the game. Sophomore Eliza Statile (Ipswich, Mass.) played the opening half making one save. Rookie Sarah Delany (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) took over at the start of the second half and had four saves.
The Bobcats outshot the Huskies 39-13 and had a 17-6 advantage in draw controls, while the Huskies had a 28-24 edge in ground balls.
Southern Maine is back in action on Thursday (4:30 p.m.) traveling to New England College. Bates will travel to Hamilton College for a NESCAC game on Saturday (11:00 a.m.).
