BOSTON -- Sophomore Gabby Brooks (Palmero, Maine/Messalonskee) earned two points, but it was not enough as the visiting University of Southern Maine women's tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision to the University of Massachusetts Boston in a Little East Conference match Tuesday afternoon at the B.C. High Courts.
The win improved the host Beacons mark to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play. The Huskies dropped their fourth straight match to slip to 2-7 overall, and they remain winless in seven conference matches.
Brooks combined with junior Joanna Scheidegger (Lyss, Switzerland) for an 8-2 win at #3 doubles to give USM its first point. Brooks returned later to take a 7-5, 6-3 win over rookie Annie Fidelia (Stoneham, Mass./Medford) in the #6 singles match.
For UMB, seniors Kristy Garcia (Miami, Fla.), Martina Daelli (Florence, Italy) and Meghan Erickson (Hubbardston, Mass.) and sophomore Katie Gauthier (West Boylston, Mass.) all went 2-0 in the match. Garcia's straight sets win at #1 singles produced the clinching fifth point for the Beacons.
Southern Maine closes the regular season on October 14 (1:00 p.m.) traveling to Salem State University for an LEC match. UMass Boston will host Rhode Island College this Saturday (1:00 p.m.) in a conference match.
