Southern Maine Nips St. Joseph's College 1-0

Box Score

GORHAM, Maine  –  Junior Dorina Sirois (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) scored her first goal of the season in the 41st minute to propel the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 1-0 win over the St. Joseph's College (Maine) Monks in a non-conference field hockey game Monday afternoon at SJC Athletic Complex.

With the win, Southern Maine concludes its 2017 season at 6-13 overall.  The loss snaps a four-game win streak, and is the first defeat of the season for the Monks at home.   St. Joseph's College is now 12-5 overall.

Despite being outshot more than 10-to-1 in the game, the Huskies were able to prevail in their season-ending contest on the strength of freshman goalkeeper McKenzie Cormier (Hiram, Maine/Sacopee Valley) and Sirois' second-half goal.  Cormier was outstanding in net for Southern Maine, making a season and career-high 14 saves as SJC outshot the Huskies 21-2, including a 10-0 effort in the opening half.  With the Huskies registering just two shots in the contest, both in the second half, Sirois, a member of USM's defense, was able to convert an assist from senior Kaitlin Hilton (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy), for just the second goal of her career, and the first game-winner of her career.

The shut out was the second of the season for Cormier who finished the 2017 season playing in 13 games and starting 12 as a rookie.  She made 74 saves on the year with a respectable 1.93 goals against average.  St. Joseph's junior Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) did not record a save in the loss.
