Southern Maine WVB Downs UMass Dartmouth, Falls to Brandeis

Huskies Host Saint Joseph's (Me.) on Thursday

            GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's volleyball team improved its Little East Conference record to 2-0 and extended its winning streak to five matches Saturday with a 3-0 victory (25-18, 25-17, 25-16) over visiting University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to open a tri-match at the Warren Hill Gymnasium.

            The Huskies (10-4, 2-0) winning streak was halted a few hours later when they fell to Brandeis University 3-0 (25-15, 27-25, 25-23) in a non-conference match.  Brandeis (6-6) also defeated UMass Dartmouth (6-7; 0-2) in a non-conference match 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-18). 

Match One:  Southern Maine 3, UMass Dartmouth 0

            Junior Jess Williamson (Goffstown, N.H.) picked up her seventh double-double of the season for the Huskies knocking down 14 kills and digging up 11 balls.  She also served up five aces.

            Junior Mo Raymond (Sanbornton, N.H.) and rookie Faolain Harrington (Auburn, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) complemented Williamson at the net with a combined 14 kills.  Raymond had eight kills on 20 attacks while Harrington contributed six kills on 11 attacks without an error.

            Senior Megan Nilson (Granby, Conn.) passed out 18 assists, and sophomore Nicole Schmitz (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) dished out 15.

            UMD rookie Anita Sengara (Vancouver, B.C.) matched Williamson with 14 kills, and sophomore Olivia Wallett (Willington, Conn.) added six kills.  Senior setter Christina Spinazola (Medway, Mass.) passed out 25 assists and had nine digs, and first-year libero Jillian Sykora (Waterford, Conn.) dug up 10 balls. 

Match Three: Brandeis 3, Southern Maine 0

            The Huskies looked sluggish in the opening set against the Judges, but rebounded to play better in the final two sets.  Both sides had chances to win the pivotal second set before the Judges prevailed in overtime.  The Huskies rallied in the third set, but could not overcome the Judges' big lead and balanced attack.

            Williamson led USM with 16 kills and 11 digs for her eight double-double.  Nilson had 19 assists and 11 digs for a double-double.

            Sophomore Grace Krumpack (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the Judges with 14 kills and 13 digs.  Rookie Emma Bartlett (Duxbury, Mass.) added 12 kills, and senior Jessica Kaufman (Tucson, Ariz.) and sophomore Kristen Frauens (Webster, N.Y.) had six kills apiece.  Sophomore Leah Pearlman (El Paso, Texas) had 22 assists, and classmate Yvette Cho (San Diego, Calif.) was outstanding on the backline with 23 digs.  

Match Two: Brandeis 3, UMass Dartmouth 0

            Brandeis used its balanced attack to keep UMD off balance as six players had five or more kills.  Sophomore Marlee Nork (Chicago, Ill.) had 18 assists, and Pearlman added 11 helpers.

            Sengara led the Corsairs with eight kills, and Spinazola passed out 18 assists.  Sykora had a match-high 12 digs, and rookie Meghan Mullinax (Lake Balboa, Calif.) dug up 11 balls. 

Up Next

            Southern Maine continues its home stand on Thursday (7:00 p.m.) hosting Saint Joseph's College.  UMass Dartmouth heads to Regis College for a non-conference match on Tuesday (6:00 p.m.).  Brandeis travels to Pittsburgh, Penn., next weekend to play three matches in the first weekend of UAA round robin.
