Southern Maine Gets First Win Downing Thomas 7-2

GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's tennis team earned its first win of the season Thursday posting a 7-2 triumph over visiting Thomas College at the Gorham High School courts.

The win snapped a five-match skid for the Huskies who are now 1-5 on the season, and also avenged a season-opening, 5-4 loss at the hands of the Terriers.  The Terriers slide to 2-5 on the season.

Southern Maine jumped out to a 3-0 lead taking the three doubles matches, then came back to win four of the six singles matches to secure its first win.  All the matches were played as eight-game pro sets due to the limited time available to play before sunset.

Freshman Mackenzie Colby (Southport, Maine/Boothbay Region) led the way for the Huskies winning the number one singles match 8-3 over senior Lindsey Allen (Jay, Maine/Spruce Mountain), and combined with sophomore Courtney Jordan (Portland, Maine/Westbrook) for an 8-2 win at number two doubles.  Jordan also won her singles match, taking the number four flight 8-6 over sophomore Mia Navarro (Willimantic, Conn./Windham).

Other singles winners for USM include sophomores Margaret Smith (Farmingdale, Maine/Gardiner Area) and Joanna Scheidegger (Lyss, Switzerland) at number five and six, respectively.  Smith defeated sophomore Maddelyn Butts (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) 8-2 while Scheidegger posted an 8-0 win over sophomore Sarah Vigue (Dexter, Maine).

Thomas got its two points on singles wins by juniors Olivia Mora (Surry, Maine/Ellsworth) and Amelia Guimond (Fort Kent, Maine) at number two and three.

Southern Maine is back in action on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) traveling to Worcester State University for a Little East Conference match.  Thomas is also in action on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) hosting Castleton University in a North Atlantic Conference match.
