Southern Maine Falls to Thomas in Season Opener
WATERVILLE, Maine -- Newcomers Courtney Jordan (Portland, Maine/Westbrook) and Mackenzie Colby (Southport, Maine/Boothbay Region) combined to win three points, but it was not enough as the University of Southern Maine women's tennis team fell to Thomas College 5-4 in the season-opening match for both squads.
Colby took a 6-2, 6-1 win over junior Amelia Guimond (Fort Kent, Maine) at number three singles, while Jordan won a straight sets victory over sophomore Sarah Vigue (Dexter, Maine) at number five. The USM duo also earned a walkover victory at third doubles. USM's fourth point came on a walkover win at number six singles.
Senior Lindsey Allen (Jay, Maine/Spruce Mountain) and junior Olivia Mora (Surry, Maine/Ellsworth) matched Jordan and Colby taking three points for the host Terriers. Allen and Mora combined to take an 8-6 at number one doubles, then returned to take the top two singles matches. Allen came from behind to defeat USM senior Deb Attalla (Navarre, Fla.) in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, and Mora knocked off senior Liz Martin (Naugatuck, Conn./Woodland Regional) in straight sets.
Sophomore Mia Navarro (Willimantic, Conn./Windham) picked up the other two Thomas points. Navarro took a 6-3, 7-5 win at number four singles over senior Rikki Demoranville (Madawaska, Maine), and combined with Guimond for an 8-6 win at number two doubles.
Southern Maine (0-1) is off until September 10 when it opens its Little East Conference schedule hosting Bridgewater State University. Thomas will entertain Husson University (1-0) for its next match, a non-conference event, also on September 10.
