Box Score Huskies Clinch Sixth Seed in LEC Tournament
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Sarah Pelligrinelli (Southington, Conn.) equaled the school single-game record for points as the University of Southern Maine Huskies rolled past the visiting Rhode Island College Anchorwomen 20-2 in a Little East Conference women's lacrosse game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
The win clinched a berth in the upcoming LEC tournament for the Huskies who finished the regular season 5-9 overall and 2-4 in the conference. The Huskies will be the sixth seed in the tournament that starts Tuesday with first-round games.
The Anchorwomen dropped the fifth straight game to finish the season 4-10 overall and 0-6 in LEC play.
Pelligrinelli scored five times and dished out five assists for the second 10-point game of her career. Pelligrinelli shares the single-game scoring record with former teammate Jacki Kelly.
Junior Sam Campobasso (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) complemented Pelligrinelli netting seven points on three goals and four assists. Classmate Lauren Lessard (Lewiston, Maine/Kents Hill) added three goals and one assist. Freshmen Hannah LaSalle (Humarock, Mass./Marshfield) and Meghan Bishop (North Bennington, Vt./Mt. Anthony Union) and senior Shauna Robert (Lyman, Maine/Massabesic) scored two goals apiece.
Senior Caley Presby (Portland, Maine/Deering) and freshman Miriam Wood (Wakefield, Mass.) split the goaltending chores for USM. Presby earned her fourth win of the season making one save in 33:17, while Wood recorded two saves over 26:43.
Rookie Tess Bradley (Tiverton, R.I.) scored both RIC goals. Freshman goalie Julia Eaton (Cumberland, R.I.), who was under siege from the start, stopped 17 shots.
The Huskies came out flying scoring seven times in the first five minutes. Six different players scored in the outburst with Campobasso being the only repeat goal scorer.
Two goals from Pelligrinelli and another from Campobasso increased the lead to 10-0 midway through the half before Bradley put the Anchorwomen on the board at 10:58 with her 34th goal of the season.
Goals from Lessard, LaSalle and Robert, and two more from Pelligrinelli, made it 15-1 at halftime.
Southern Maine piled up a huge 42-7 edge in shots, a 29-17 advantage in the battle for ground balls and a 17-6 margin in draw controls.
Prior to the start of the game, the Huskies recognized their five departing seniors playing their final home game - Pelligrinelli, Robert, Presby, Molly Gerbutavich (Haverhill, Mass.) and Anh Nguyen (South Portland, Maine).
