Box Score Southern Maine Runs by UMaine Farmington 21-2
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Heather Everett (Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) scored a season-high six points on five goals and one assist as the University of Southern Maine ran past the University of Maine at Farmington 21-2 in non-conference women's lacrosse action Monday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
The win snapped the Huskies' six-game losing skid and improved their overall record to 2-6. The Beavers have lost their last four outings and fell to 2-5 overall.
In addition to her offensive production, Everett had an outstanding all-around game scooping up eight ground balls, earning eight draw controls and causing four UMF turnovers.
Senior Sarah Pelligrinelli (Southington, Conn.) added four goals to the Huskies offense. Senior Shauna Robert (Lyman, Maine/Massabesic) contributed a hat trick as ten different USM players recorded a goal in the game. Junior Sam Campobasso (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) had two goals and two assists for four points.
Senior Caley Presby (Portland, Maine/Deering) and rookie Miriam Wood (Wakefield, Mass.) split the goaltending chores for USM. Presby made three saves in the first half and was credited with the win. Wood played the second half stopping one shot.
Sophomore Sierra Gilley (Harpswell, Maine/Mt. Ararat) scored both goals for UMF. Classmate Alyssa Arsenault (Winthrop, Maine) registered 11 saves.
Robert got the Huskies off on the right foot winning the opening draw and scoring 16 seconds into the game. Sierra responded for the Beavers at 27:13 to tie the game, but that would be the last tie as the Huskies scored the next 10 goals to take an 11-1 lead into the halftime break. Everett scored the final goal of the half with one second remaining.
The Huskies tacked four more goals on to their lead making it 15-1 before Sierra beat Wood for her second goal at 15:16. The Huskies added six more goals before the end of the game, including the first goal of the season from junior Aubrey Pennell (Bowdoinham, Maine/Freeport) and rookie Alexandra Sardinha (Lebanon, Maine/Noble). Pennell also caused four UMF turnovers in the game.
Southern Maine dominated the stat sheet outshooting UMF 37-10 and winning the battle for ground balls 35-19. Led by Everett, the Huskies piled up an 18-5 in draw controls.
The Huskies will play non-conference foe Maine Maritime Academy in their next game on Thursday (5:00 p.m.). The Beavers will play Husson University in a North Atlantic Conference game on Wednesday (7:00 p.m.) at Thomas College.
