UNE Pulls Away in Second Half, Downs USM 14-8

GORHAM, Maine -- The visiting University of New England Nor'easters outscored the University of Southern Maine Huskies 7-2 in the second half to pull away for a 14-8 victory in non-conference women's lacrosse action Saturday at Hannaford Field.

Sparked by rookie Korinne Bohunsky (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood), the Nor'easters scored five unanswered goals in the opening 21 minutes of the second half to increase their one-goal halftime lead (7-6) to 12-6.  Bohunsky scored two goals 45 seconds apart in the opening two minutes to provide the Nor'easters with a spark coming out of the halftime break.

Rookie Nicole Carvalho (South Kingstown, R.I.), senior Katie Cawley (Cumberland, Maine/NYA) and sophomore Olivia Carpenter (Middlebury, Vt.) added goals over the next 16 minutes to give the Nor'easters their biggest lead of the game.

USM got goals from juniors Lauren Lessard (Lewiston, Maine/Kents Hill) and Heather Everett (Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) to get back within four (12-8) with 3:48 to play, but sophomore Paige St. George (Nashua, N.H./Manchester Central) broke the momentum with an unassisted marker at 2:15 to play.  Junior Jocelyn Davee (Freeport, Maine) scored the final marker with two seconds to play.

The first half followed the script of the past few games for the Huskies as they fell behind, then came back to tie.  Davee scored twice bracketing a tally from Bohunsky to stake UNE to a 3-0 lead less than eight minutes into the game.

Junior Sam Campobasso (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) got USM on the board with a pair of goals, and Lessard tied the game at 3-3 with 12:56 to go.

Two goals 48 seconds apart from Davee restored the lead to the Nor'easters, but the Huskies came right back on a pair of goals by senior Sarah Pelligrinelli (Southington, Conn.).  The four combined goals came within a span of 2:13.

Bohunsky put UNE in the lead for good with 8:00 to go.  Cawley made it 7-5 before Campobasso scored her third goal of the half with 2:31 left in the half.

Davee led all scorers with six points on five goals and one assist.  She also had a team-high six ground balls and caused five turnovers.  Bohunsky finished with four goals, and Cawley added two goals.  Junior Brooke Kelleher (Exeter, N.H.) dished out two assists.

Campobasso led the Huskies' offense with three goals and one assists.  Lessard and Pelligrinelli had a pair of goals.

UNE's senior goaltending tandem of Courtney Kendall (Waltham, Mass./Lawrence Academy) and Lauryn Huck (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) split the game combining to make 11 saves.  USM senior Caley Presby (Portland, Maine/Deering) stopped 12 shots.

UNE outshot USM 33-24 for the game, including 16-9 in the second half.  The Nor'easters won the battle of the ground balls, 29-27, while the Huskies had a 15-9 edge in draw controls.

The win was the second straight for the Nor'easters, and puts them over .500 for the first time since March 1.  The Nor'easters are now 4-3 overall heading into their Commonwealth Coast Conference opener against Curry College at home on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.).  The Huskies dropped their third straight decision to slide to 1-3 on the season.  The Huskies travel to Bates College for a non-conference game on Tuesday (4:30 p.m.).
