Southern Maine Gets First Win By Downing Thomas 8-1

Huskies Open LEC Play Saturday at Plymouth State

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Emily Estes (Gorham, Maine) and junior Rikki Demoranville (Madawaska, Maine) combined for a win at second doubles, then came back to post victories in singles matches as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Thomas College Terriers 8-1 in non-conference action Thursday afternoon at the Costello Sports Complex Field House.  The match was moved indoors due to thundershowers in the area.

The win leveled the Huskies record at 1-1 on the season.  The match was the season opener for the Terriers who only had five players available.

Estes and Demoranville earned a tough, 8-6 win over sophomore Amelia Guimond (Fort Kent, Maine) and senior Katie McAllister (Pittston, Maine/Gardiner) to help the Huskies grab a 2-1 lead after the doubles matches were contested.  In singles play, Estes battled her way to a 9-7 win over McAllister, and Demoranville took an 8-3 decision over Guimond.

Thomas earned its lone point of the match when junior Lindsey Allen (Jay, Maine/Spruce Mountain) and sophomore Olivia Mora (Surry, Maine/Ellsworth) defeated the USM duo of juniors Katie Quinn (Hollis, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and Liz Martin (Naugatuck, Conn./Woodland Regional) at first doubles 8-3.

Quinn and Martin avenged the doubles setback by winning their singles matches over Allen and Mora.  Quinn defeated Allen 8-6 while Martin posted an 8-3 victory over Mora.

Southern Maine will play its first Little East Conference match of the season on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) when it travels to Plymouth State University.  Thomas is off until September 11 (4:00 p.m.) when it takes on crosstown foe Colby College in a non-conference match.
