Box Score Huskies at UMass Boston on Tuesday
STANDISH, Maine -- Junior Taylor Reuillard (Biddeford, Maine) and sophomore Scott Betts (Peabody, Mass.) combined for six hits, four runs and five RBI as the Saint Joseph's College Monks defeated the 20th-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies 10-7 in non-conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond.
The win raises the Monks record to 22-12 overall, including 16 wins in their last 18 outings. The Huskies slip to 18-9 overall.
Betts was 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBI while Reuillard was 3 for 5 and scored three times. Senior Joe Coyne (Duxbury, Mass.) also had a pair of hits and scored two runs.
Rookie right-hander Steven Albert (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian), the second of six St. Joseph's hurlers, picked up his third win of the season with 2 2/3 innings of hitless shutout relief.
Junior Sam Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) and sophomores Paul McDonough (Wells, Maine) and Matt Bender (Walpole, Mass.) had two hits apiece for the Huskies. Dexter had his fourth home run of the season and scored three runs. Bender also scored three times.
Sophomore starter Zack Bean (Westbrook, Maine) suffered his second loss of the season. Bean surrendered five runs in three-plus innings of work.
The Huskies scored single runs in the first three innings to offset a three-run first inning for the Monks. Dexter scored his first run on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Damon Wallace (Gorham, Maine) in the first. Bender scored an unearned run in the second on an errant pickoff attempt. Dexter crossed the plate for the second time on an infield error in the third to tie the game at 3-3.
Bender gave USM a short-lived 4-3 lead in the fourth scoring on rookie Brandon Martins (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) groundout.
Betts gave the Monks the lead for good in the fourth hitting a two-run homer off Bean. The Monks added three runs in the fifth against senior reliever Andrew Richards (South Portland, Maine). Sophomore Dan Donovan (Lynn, Mass./St. Mary's) knocked in the first run with a double, and Coyne scored the second run when Donovan's hit was misplayed for an error. Betts knocked in Donovan with a single to make it 8-4.
St. Joseph's tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh on an outfield error and Betts' RBI single.
The Huskies scored once in the eighth on a passed ball, and twice in the ninth inning on Dexter's solo home run and an RBI single by Wallace.
Southern Maine is on the road on Tuesday (3:00 p.m.) to play the University of Massachusetts Boston in a Little East Conference game at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton, Mass. St. Joseph's hosts Thomas College for a non-conference game on Tuesday (3:00 p.m.).
