Campobasso Leads USM Past Eastern Connecticut 14-6

Sophomore Scores Career High Eight Goals

            GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Sam Campobasso (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) scored a career-high eight goals to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 14-6 victory over the visiting Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors Saturday afternoon in Little East Conference women's lacrosse action on Senior Day at Hannaford Field.

            The win improved the Huskies' record to 5-10 overall, and 2-2 in conference play.  The Warriors dropped their fourth decision in the last five games to slip to 4-10 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

            Campobasso scored seven times in the first half to help the Huskies build a 10-4 advantage.  Her eight goals scored was one shy of the school single-game record held by Jacki Kelly.  Campobasso also had one assist to finish with nine total points.

            Senior Julia Pearl (Essex Jct., Vt.) added three goals, six ground balls and five draw controls.  Junior Anh Nguyen (South Portland, Maine) had one goal and three assists while classmate Sarah Pelligrinelli (Southington, Conn.) contributed two goals and one assist.

            Junior goalie Caley Presby (Portland, Maine/Deering) stopped 11 shots to earn her fifth win of the season.

            Freshman Katie Burke (South Windsor, Conn./East Catholic) had two goals and one assist to lead the Warrior offense.  Sophomore goalie Taylor Emmerson (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy) finished with 10 saves.  Sophomore Devyne Doran (South Kingstown, R.I./Prout School) shared game-high honors with Pearl scooping up six ground balls.

            USM never trailed in the game grabbing a 2-0 lead on goals by Campobasso and Nguyen in the opening seven minutes.  Sophomore Paige Schneider (East Lyme, Conn.) got the Warriors on the board while playing down a player at the 19:00 mark with a free-position conversion.

            Campobasso and Pelligrinelli tallied markers to push the lead to 4-1 before Burke netted her first goal of the game at 16:07.

            Campobasso scored the next three goals within a span of 1:17 to give USM a 7-2 lead.  The teams traded goals over the final 11 minutes with Campobasso finding the net for the seventh time with 17 seconds remaining in the stanza to make it 10-4 at the break.

            The Huskies played deliberate offense in the second half working the clock when they were in possession.  Pelligrinelli and Campobasso pushed the lead to 12-4 as each netted their 31st goal of the campaign.  Pearl scored twice to offset goals from rookies Maddie Bodington (Stratford, Conn.) and Jenna Glynn (West Granby, Conn.) in the final 17 minutes.

            Southern Maine will finish the 2015 regular season on the road with games at Plymouth State University on Tuesday (6:30 p.m.) and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).  Eastern Connecticut closes the regular season on Tuesday (4:30 p.m.) hosting in-state rival Western Connecticut State University for an LEC match.
