Box Score Pelligrinelli and Campobasso Combined for 11 Goals
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Sarah Pelligrinelli (Southington, Conn.) and sophomore Sam Campobasso (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) combined to score 11 goals as the University of Southern Maine women's lacrosse team earned its first Little East Conference win of the season by defeating visiting Rhode Island College 20-7 Tuesday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
The win was the third in the last five games for the Huskies, and improved their record to 4-9 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The Anchorwomen remain winless after 10 games.
Pelligrinelli and Campobasso finished the game with seven points apiece as Pelligrinelli added one assist and Campobasso had two helpers. Junior Anh Nguyen (South Portland, Maine) had three goals and three assists for a six-point game, and sophomore Heather Everett (Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) tallied three goals and dished off one assist.
For the Anchorwomen, seniors Jessica Ricci (Hope, R.I./Cranston West) and Danielle Landon (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) each tallied three goals. Landon also handed out two assists and had four draw controls. Sophomore Betsy Heidel (Warwick, R.I./Pilgrim) led all players with seven draw controls.
Southern Maine scored 13 unanswered goals in the first half to take firm control of the game. Campobasso scored all five of her goals in the opening half while Pelligrinelli found the net three times. Nguyen scored twice in the first half, and Everett, senior Nicole LaPlante (South Portland, Maine) and freshman Tayla Smedberg (Oxford, Maine/Oxford Hills) had single markers.
Juniors Caley Presby (Portland, Maine/Deering) and Nia Kelly (Santa Rosa, Calif./Yorktown [Va.]) split the goaltending duties for Southern Maine. Presby made two saves in her 40 minutes of action while Kelly recorded one stop. RIC rookie goalie Alasondra Apici (Providence, R.I./Classical) had 14 saves.
Southern Maine piled up a 41-13 margin in shots and a 31-12 advantage in ground balls. RIC had a 16-13 edge in draw controls.
The Huskies are back in LEC action on Saturday (3:00 p.m.) when they host Eastern Connecticut State University. The Anchorwomen are off until next Tuesday (4:00 p.m.) when they travel to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth for an LEC encounter.
