Box Score Nguyen Scores All Three Husky Goals
PORTLAND, Maine -- The fifth-ranked Colby College Mules scored the first nine goals of the game en route to an 18-3 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in non-conference women's lacrosse action Tuesday afternoon at Memorial Field.
The win was the fourth straight for the Mules, and improved their overall record to 5-1. Colby is now 17-0 all-time against USM. The Huskies dropped their fifth straight game to slide to 0-5 on the season.
Six different players found the net for Colby in the opening 19 minutes as the visitors built a 9-0 lead. Junior Dana Swaffield (Dover, Mass./Dover-Sherborn, Mass.) had a hat trick, and classmate Abby Hooper (Nahant, Mass./Brooks School) picked up two markers and an assist in the opening salvo. Sophomore Lexie Perticone (Darien, Conn.) contributed a goal and two assists.
Junior Anh Nguyen (South Portland, Maine) broke the string of Colby goals for USM tallying the first of her three goals with 10:34 until halftime.
Sasha Fritts scored twice, and senior Abby Hatch (Wilbraham, Mass./Williston Northampton) and senior Caroline Keaveney (Greenwich, Conn.) had one apiece for the Mules to make it 13-1 at intermission.
Colby continued to dominate the second half outscoring USM 5-2.
Fritts finished with four goals for the Mules. Swaffield had three goals and one assists, while Hatch had one goal and three helpers. Overall, 11 different players scored goals for the Mules.
Rookie Sam Burch (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) started in goal for Colby and made three saves in the first half. Junior Sarah Evans (Cohasset, Mass.) took over in the second half and stopped two shots.
Nguyen scored all three USM goals. Junior Caley Presby (Portland, Maine/Deering) started in goal for the Huskies and recorded three saves. Junior Nia Kelly (Santa Rosa, Calif.) played the second half and had two saves.
Colby had a wide edge in shots (29-10), ground balls (21-13) and draw controls (15-8).
Southern Maine is off until Monday (4:00 p.m.) when it takes on Husson University in Bangor. Colby travels to New London, Conn., for a NESCAC game against Connecticut College on Saturday (11:00 a.m.).
