Box Score SALEM, Mass. – Junior Kevin Gallo (Melrose, Mass.) broke open a scoreless tie with less than three minutes remaining in regulation to lead the Salem State University Vikings to a 2-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's soccer match Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
With the loss, Southern Maine drops to 2-13-1. Salem State earns its second win of the season to stand at 2-13.
Although controlling play and holding a 17-6 advantage in shots and a 10-0 lead in corner kicks, Salem State was not able to break through for a goal until the final minutes of regulation to secure its win.
Gallo scored the first of two late Vikings' goals in the 88th minute played a cross from junior Christian Romero (Boston, Mass.) to the near post beating USM freshman goalkeeper Simon Hulbert (Bar Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island). Salem State doubled its advantage moments later as Romero struck from 20-yards out for an unassisted insurance goal.
Salem State goalkeeper sophomore Greg Enos (Peabody, Mass.) earned the win turning back three shots on goal. Hulbert made nine saves in the loss for Southern Maine.
Southern Maine closes out its season on the road at Rhode Island College on Saturday (1:00 p.m.). Salem State travels to Fitchburg State on Saturday (10:00 a.m.).
